Cincinnati, OH (AHN) - Bar owners in Ohio say a statewide ban on smoking in public places is bringing small businesses to the breaking-point. Owners of small bars, bowling alleys and other establishments say an exemption should be written in to help bring back customers.

A coalition of 300 bar owners will lobby the state government to install exceptions allowing places that receive no more than 10 percent of their revenue from food, such as bars and taverns, to allow smoking.

Patrick Carroll, president of the Buckeye Liquor Permit Holders Association explains, "Too many places are losing too much money. Some are on the verge of closing their doors." The group has collected almost 1,500 signatures pushing for an exemption for bars.

According to the Cincinnati Post, the group must collect 140,000 signatures to force the legislature to consider it. About 400,000 signatures would be needed to put the issue on the ballot if lawmakers refuse.

why do we have to have laws passed that are "GOOD FOR US". i'm so sick of other people minding my business. if i own a business i should be able to choose wether or not to allow smoking in my (not the publics) property. put a sign outside that says this is a smoking establishment. if you don't want exposure, don't come in. that puts the responsibility back to the indivual where it should be. leave government out of it. the more rights we give over to government the closer we're getting to BIG BROTHER.

I am a smoker. I no longer go out to dinner. I seldom went to a bar, tavern, but now I just stay home. I used to enjoy a drink, a cigarette before dinner. Having another drink and my cigarette after dinner. Like Ohio is not losing enough business!

I feel so sorry for people that have small business. They are only trying to make a "living."

Send me a petition and I will be more than happy to sign it!

Let me know where and how I can sign your petition.

SMOKERS HAVE RIGHTS TOO SO STOP RAISING OUR TAXES AND PUSHING US OUTSIDE LIKE CRIMINALS AND 2ND CLASS CITIZENS WHEN SMOKING IS A LEGAL ACTIVITY.

The vote was made in Nov & smoking was banned by a large margin. I am sick & tired of being told I didn't know what I was voting for. We voted and decided...end of story!!
