CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Clinic gave supporters of Ohio's new smoking ban $30,000 and urged other hospitals to back the law.
That's according to a Cleveland Plain Dealer story published yesterday.
The law was approved by voters last Tuesday and prohibits smoking almost everywhere people meet to work or play.
Voters defeated a less-restrictive ban that would've permitted bars and some other places to set aside smoking areas.
The clinic's chief executive let employees pass around petitions for Smoke-Free-Ohio. He also sent e-mails to employees urging them to approve the ballot issue.
The hospital put up a banner in favor of the issue and hosted a news conference with other northeast Ohio hospitals.
Last year, the clinic banned smoking anywhere on its property, even outdoors.
