A thread to check the many sources and the best deals.
Over the last year I've noticed a big jump in the number of sites that offer RYO supplies -- tobacco, papers, machines ect. -- some good and some not so good.

Post info on the places that you've tried and it will help those looking for the best service, product and price especially those just getting started.

John:

I buy all mine local, so I really can't add to you discussion. I am lucky that way although the selection is pretty limited.

My cost for a pound of Stocker Light is $15.69. I use Gamble Light tubes at $1.59 per box. So I smoke at very little cost. Very Happy

I've bought stuff locally as well as on line, local has a limited supply but offers you the fact you can see what you get.
Here goes with a few links I've used online:

http://www.stuffyourown.com/excigkit.html

This is were I purchased the machine, ordered it with a pound of menthol light tobacco and regular Premier tubes. Nice mix I thought for a first time.

Went local for the next batch. Purchased a 6oz bag of Gambler light with Premier menthol tubes (I thought they were heavy on the menthol).
But I liked the tobacco.

Then I saw this site which made me aware of the fact that Gambler supports the (MSA) so I have stayed away from it every since.

http://www.ryocigarette.com/

Got the next order from these folks 2 6oz bags of midnight special, 1 regular, 1 menthol plus some Elrey menthol tubes and Vera Cruz noctures, gave me the options of making a variety of different smoke combinations.

The next order was from here:

http://www.smokersoutletonline.com/catalog/tips.php

Here I ordered a 1 pound bag of the natural blend and was disappointed it was very dry, probably on the shelf to long. This is why local allows you to pick a bag and notice how it looks not get stuck with what someone throws in a box. Also got more tubes tried the Zen menthol (strong but not as strong as the Premiers), got the Mascotte methols
nice menthol but got a few smokes that had a gap by the filter and when tapped they didn't do well.

Finally I've located a nice place about 20 minutes from me in Danbury,CT.
That offers a much expanded variety of tobacco's and tubes, tried the McClintock lite with Elrey menthol tubes and like this pair a lot, at this point it is my best mix going, and the prices were equal to or better than online with the shipping.

Rudy,

First of all let me say "Welcome Aboard"

You mention that you received dry tobacco --- My fix to that is to take a cotton swab wet it and seal it up in the bag or container over night ---
I've found that there is no set standard for moisture content and that you have to adjust it up or down as needed.

I haven't been able to find a local source that I can use but I'm still looking. I've used the sites below and found them to work for me.

I've been getting my tobacco from D&R

I'd say they have a tobacco to suit just about any taste

I've been thinking of going to stuffyourown.com and trying their blend. Has anyone tried it? WHat does it taste like? Stores over here are charging more now since myo is so popular; I pay $18/carton now. That has to stop.

My first purchase was from them. I got my machine and a lb. of the menthol light. I thought it was good tobacco, guessing it would be a medium to fine cut, and it was pretty clean and seemed pretty fresh.

I just put in an order today from Smokers Outlet for a lb. of Golden Harvest light and ELRey menthol tubes, that seems to be the way I'm leaning for that light menthol taste I'm used to. The Golden Harvest is said (in the ryo forum) to taste like Marlboro, so @ 11.59 a lb. I'll give it a try.
The link for Smokers Outlet is in my post above. I did get the driest stuff so far from them but I'm guessing it was because I chose the Natural blend which most likely is not a big seller. If this stuff comes in dry I won't use them again.

Here's a link to the forum which describes some tobaccos.

That's a cool forum I wouldn't try golden harvest, becasue it seems to be an all American grown tobacco. From the word golden, I would think that would mean that it is all bright tobacco. I like a little bright in my cigarettes for the robust flavor, but all bright would be too harsh for me. Maybe you'll like it. I know Marlboro has a lot of bright (golden) tobacco in them. You can seee it in the cigarette. Marlboro also mixes a little bit of dark oriental tobacco in them. Maybe their menthols are different though.

Tom:

What are smoking now, and what is the cost?

I am smoking Stoker light at $15.69 a pound and Gambler Light tubes at $1.59 per box.

Just curious.

Not a great selection, and I do want to buy from the local shops.

Funny I read the reviews after I put in my order (mistake maybe) about the Golden Harvest seems like it's a 50-50 tobacco some like it, some hate it.
As a newbie I'm still experimenting on a everyday mix.
I have decided that the menthol tobacco's I've tried are stronger than I prefer so I'm heading toward a light tobacco with a menthol tube.
Still prefer buying local but the selection is shitty by me, There is a shop about 30 miles from me with a better selection but I don't consider that really local. By the time I add in my gas costs and the time to get it I can still do better online.
