I live in MA and recently, on 1st of July, 2008, state tax was raised - now a pack of cigs is around $8. Obviously, I am not going to encourage such thing and I want to have my cigarettes for some reasonable price.

Don't order online, Deval 'Cadillac' will want those extra taxes from you.....one day or years from now.

Drive to NH or Find someone else that drives to NH and buy up there, [unless you live on the Cape- but people on the Cape are also driving to NH]
NH is only 1 hour away from most towns in MA.

Gas, Food and Booze is cheaper there too so it's a win-win.

Or do what Darkseid typed, Make your own.
I haven't paid exorbitant MA or NH cigarette taxes for years.

You can make a pack of cigarettes [depending on the tobacco used] anywhere from $0.75/pk to $2.00/pk.

I see. But I don't have a car :-/
Could someone give me an idea where to look for tobacco to MYO? And paper, as well. I live in Boston, so I need something relatively close.

Most stores that carry cigarettes also carry one or two brands of rolling tobacco (usually bugler and tops). Find a smoke shop where you can buy also. I live in Arizona and don't have a car and lousy mass transit (boston's is better I believe) so I do most of my tobacco and tubes buying online as I'm too lazy to take the 2 buses it would take me to get to the nearest smoke shop that carries my American Spirit tobacco as well as tubes. You might have to buy the machine to stuff them online though as I've not found one locally yet.

Yes, I should try find some good tobacco shop around. And I guess I can't buy loose tobacco online because they can bill me for that as well, right?

The tax deal is nowhere near the same as it is for pre-made cigarettes. It's more like regular sales tax, not bad at all.

Looks like they are seizing cigarettes again JFK (CBP) Customs sent me a letter this saturday same day I was to get them, only my second order I got the first 2 cartons no problem.
From what a few people told me they have been getting them for years from this place without any problems, now in just the last week they got a letter also.

From what I have found out up to 1000 cigarettes, 100 cigars or 1qt of alcohol is legal to import for personal use.

The place I orderd them from say,

"We promise to rectify the occurred situation. It was unexpected for us too and we are sure that it was just a mistake.
This seizure took place because of the wrong application of the Imported Cigarette Compliance Act of 2000.
We send the cigarettes in small parcels and they are intended only for personal use.
That is why we do not violate US laws while sending our parcels to the USA. It is legal to buy cigarettes in our shop and you will not incur into any further troubles with the Customs or US authorities.

We guaranty you to fully refund your order or send you a replacement."

Edit update,

I talked to the online cigarette store today even though they are refunding me also gave me the choice to have them replaced. since I have more coming Im waiting to see what happens and having these refunded.

They also gave me a contact on how to get them back from customs because no laws were broken, your allowed to import up to 1000 cigarettes, 100 cigars or 1qt of liquor duty free the Store is legit and very honest they aren't out to scam anyone.

Reason why customs took them, the US goverment is losing 34cents per pack and it's there way of being jerks even though no laws were broken they just say your importing to resell, reselling duty free goods is against import laws.

Now to get them back they assume you won't waste your time and if you do they are willing to waste who knows how much of tax payers money over $13.60 the amount they lost over 2 cartons that were not to be taxed in the first place!

I'm sure going through the process to get them back could take months, LOL

I had two orders pending delivery from an ONLINE cig store. Got a the same letter from US Customs that a package had been siezed and would be destroyed in 30 days blah blah blah. I determined it was the first outstanding order that got siezed. The second order was delivered on time. The 'store' refunded the purchase of the first order (siezed) .. no problem .. at all. Pretty much end of story.

Last night, on the TV news was an 85 year-old woman who got a $4,000+ demand for pmt in Pennsylvania .. cig taxes due the State on her online cig purchases. It was followed by an attorney who stated very clearly, buying cigs ... ANYWHERE, and not paying the taxes on them is ILLEGAL. Nothing about 'personal use' or 'gift' or anything else. He said it was flat out illegal.

It was also revealed that with online cig sales, the websites were compelled to report sales .. and that is how the elderly lady got caught.

The 'store' I use claims to be offshore and does NOT REPORT sales and is immune from such US law to report .. outside US jurisdiction. They say I was "caught" simply due to a random Customs exam and in fact, the seizure was illegal (something about 'personal use' and Customs having their head up their asses). They claim the seizure and letter is 'No big deal' and it is 'perfectly safe to purchase from their website'. I don't know if I can mention the website here or not .. I will be glad to though if OK.

The point is .. what to believe? I am in TX. I would love to find a concise answer. Anyone have one? Seems it boils down to the 'personal use' issue .. doesn't it?

Whilst I sit with cigarette in one hand and coffee cup in the other (assuming) I only have two....
I often thought after spending a good many years as a paralegal, how many laws is an American subject to the second his feet hit the floor, presuming that he's in his own bed, and his feet are hitting his own floor. Hell, I don't know that I could name all the subtitles....anyone got an ideal for getting that info????

I believe the laws start while in the bed - with the warning tags on pillows and the mattress Cool
