Luggage that is checked in is nowadays also x-ray scanned, while you’re not present (somewhere along the conveyor belts on the way to the plane or you give the bags to an inspector after the airline puts on the tags and they “take care” of your stuff from that point on – basically you don’t get to watch them go through your stuff). If they find something suspicious they open the bag for inspection, hence you are not supposed to lock your bags these days or they will break the lock. According to TSA, if they inspect your bag they leave a note inside with the inspector’s badge number and such. I have taken commercial cigarettes in checked baggage many times after 9/11, I just wonder if the supermatic, empty cigarette tubes and tobacco can be regarded as some kind of drug paraphernalia. I do know that now you can only take matches, no lighters on yourself. Maybe I’m just paranoid as I have on occasion noticed people rolling cigarettes once they get out of the terminal. Maybe the thing to do is to pre-make enough cigarettes and put them in empty commercial cigarette boxes that I find lying in the ashtrays at work.

A friend of mine was talking me into booking a flight to Oak Ridge Tennessee for a convention that relates to one of my hobbies. However, I decided that I don't want some nut case from the TSA looking up my "wrong end" so to speak. I just don't like the idea of being cavity searched, and essentially treated like I'm a prisoner or something. The airline industry can just stick it where the sun don't shine!

Or a baggie would work. How about just a cheap hand stuffer? I bring one with me whenever I travel.

I guess my biggest concern is not the supermatic but rather bringing a big 8 oz bag of tobacco and empty tubes which I'd have to take regardless whether I get a plastic injector or not. The supermatic just looks like some weird gadget to someone who doesn't know and since there's no wires sticking out or electronic components I don't think it's an issue. I guess the alternative is to find a tobacco dealer in the place I'm visiting, but that seems too involved since I don't know the area and probably won't have a car.

Don't worry about law enforcement. They're well aware of make your own cigarettes, and they can tell the difference between tobacco and other stuff. I got pulled over twice with my cigarette stuff, they saw it, and they don't even question it. Just throw out those free hand rolling papers that come with the tobacco.

The problem is that the people doing the inspections at the airport aren't law enforcement.

That was my concern, that some inspector sees a bag of funny stuff in my bag and then my bags don't make it on the plane while they open it and find someone who can tell them that what's in there is nothing illegal. Or worse yet that I get called on the loudspeaker and have to go prove that what I have isn't illegal and miss the flight then. But as Tom said, the illegal stuff does look different and I do believe the TSA people have some law enforcement role as they can arrest you and carry guns, so they might not be as incompetent as I think.

If you leave it in the original container you should have no problems. Another alternative might be to actually mail your stuff to the Hotel.

Call ahead and see if the Hotel will accept the package.

I think that's a great idea, I'll just go buy a tin of tobacco (I've been ordering from American Thrust and they sell their brand of tobacco in bags with what looks like cheap-ink jet printed labels, hence I was feeling sketchy). That way the contents are clearly labeled.

Cheers,

Peter

I'm definitely a make your own convert.

I ordered the new customer special from smoker's wharehouse. I liked the savings but was kind of annoyed with the machine. I figured that a little annoyance was worth the extra savings though. Then, the other day I picked up a Bugler hand injector at the local smoke shop. OMG, I love this little hand injector. It is so much easier to use and far less messy.

The smoker's wharehouse tobacco was bitter and not really great (but OK, on par with BASIC brand cigs). It was also really fine and tended to clog the machine.

I picked up a little .75 oz pack of midnight special at the smoke shop and may never smoke anything else ever again. It's better than any namebrand menthol I have had, including my beloved camel jade. A pound of it (3 6oz bags) from lil' browns is 14.90 which is significantly cheaper than the local smoke shop even after shipping. The local smoke shop charged $1.60 for the .75 oz bag and didn't have the 6 oz bags at all.

The smoker's wharehouse tobacco was supposed to be enough for 3 cartons but really only was enough for about 2 cartons. When I ordered the midnight special I was figuring on it being about the same, but there seems to be more in the bad. I think it's because the smoker's wharehouse stuff is so fine that it settles more. So maybe a pound of midnight special will make closer to 3 cartons, would be great if it did.
