I'm seriously considering on jumping on the MYO bandwagon but I'm a bit hesitant since most posts regarding the Premier Supermatic make it sound like there's a lot of problems with it and you have to spend all sorts of time to adjust/clean and fine tune the machine in addition to the mess and a steep learning curve.

Hence I was thinking if it may be worth trying out the cheaper machines first such as the Premier Quick fill which goes for about 7-10 bucks on ebay before I commit to springing $50 for the supermatic. Anyone have any experience with this one? Any other models out there for less than $10-20 that are worth giving a try? Many thanks in advance!

There are some problems with the supermatic.

Why?

Because it's a machine!

LOL

In reality though, if you want a truley frustrating experience that will make you never want to continue MYO, buy a cheap machine and don't take the process seriously.

I did, and quit MYO after the first month, then I found a Premier Supermatic at a rummage sale, took the advise of a few friends, and after reading up on how to "tune it up", was making a carton in about 70 minutes. Not great, but I attained that in about 3 weeks, after 3 months I have been able to do a carton in 50 minutes, and now that I finally hooked it up to my work bench and do it while standing, I do a carton in 35 to 40 minutes.

Seriously, the Supermatic, once adjusted properly and "tuned" will only need modest (5 minutes) of care per couple of months.

If that saves me $25.00 a carton, its FANTASTIC.

Excell, Supermatic Premier or Supermatic II. I can't recomend anything else.

Nearly all problems can be traced back to three things: Too moist tobacco, too dry tobacco, or overstuffing the machine.

Go to the link in my signature and you will find many posts by people who swear by the Premier Supermatic. The little hand injectors are a waste of time if you are actually considering a complete change to MYO.

I have to agree with Roland.

Some people think that tobacco must be moist to be "fresh", thats simply not true, in fact, in my early experience I actually tried to get mine moister (is that a word?) and ended up with moldy tobaccy.

Too dry? That is a hard thing to do once you get quick enough to produce a smoke fairly fast.

Best advise. Take your tobacco from the bag, seal it in a tupperware container. Open it while making them, and seal it tightly while not making them.

I can not remember the last time my machine jammed on me, it has to have been over 6 months ago.

As for maintenance, the last time I sharpened the blade was a few days after new years day. I just checked it and it is still incredibly sharp.

One thing I have noticed on the Premier is that the 2 brass nuts on the top will become loose. When they do the whole machine acts as though the blades are dull and it gets hard to push out a decent quality cig, so I keep a wrench handy and tighten those two lil suckers before each use.

Many thanks for the feedback...I'll probably wait a bit before I jump, I'm actually trying to cut back on smoking and I don't know if having access to cheap smokes would help. And I guess the MYO deal is not quite as easy as buying a new coffeemaker where all you do is put in coffee and a filter and water and there's little to go wrong.

I used to use yesmoke and since that went down I've cut back quite a bit to 3-4 packs a week so I don't want to go back to the 2 pack a day deal. Does the bulk tobacco go stale? But even at regular prices here (in Oregon $4 a pack) it adds up fast. Wow now I'm rambling. Thanks again.

Despite all the horror posts, the Supermatic is really fine out of the box. Making sure the tobacco is prepared for stuffing is the most important thing that insures easy stuffing. I do two things to my tobacco; dry it out a bit and sift it through a wire colander. These two steps will generally insure problem- free cigarette making. As for the 'mess' I make my cigarettes sitting in my easy chair with the Supermatic, a small bowl of tobacco and a stack of tubes on a cookie sheet in my lap. I almost always get up pretty clean, unless a cat jumps in my lap. The cookie sheet makes clean up a snap, just empty your spillage back into a container or the trash.

Absolutely. I have found that sifting out the powdery stuff make all the difference in the world.

well I just got a Premier Supermatic on ebay for $48 incl. shipping. After about 6 cigarettes which I packed too loosely (following the warnings not to overstuff the compartment) I got a few decent smokes using Bugler Rolling Tobacco, which was the only thing I could buy at 9 PM in a convenience store since I got home late. This is so cool. It took about 10 minutes to make 6 cigarettes. The Bugler tobacco came in long threads so it gummed up the top of the cutter some, I had to scrape that all of with the fingernail. The taste is a bit odd, anyone have recommendations for tobacco that tastes like a marlboro red? How about tobaccos that don't have additives or chemicals? What brands are there in addition to the American Spirit?
