How does the government pressure these web sites to comply?

Ok, I got a letter today from the IL Dept. of Revenue saying I owed money for 5 cartons of cigarettes I bought from Cigarette Outlet, 1303 Grumman Drive, Richmond, VA 23229. They included late filing penalties, late payment pentalties and interest. I never even knew I had to file or pay anything. Has anyone found a way to avoid paying or reduce the amout owed?

I also recently got several tax letters from IL Dept of Revenue for cigs bought at this site. I called the IRS and they flat out told me the company turned over the customer lists to them. Today I'm finding out all kinds of things about this company. They went out of business and stuck it to their customers, bottom line. Call the number on your form. The IRS is working on getting the penalties and late fees taken off the bills. You will only pay the tax which is much better. You will have to pay the bill. They do have payment plans. These bills can go back to 2001 from the research I have done on the Internet. Yep it sucks but so does this company for turning over their customer list. I believe they are in Kentucky now. Only selling to people in KY.I typed in www.cigoutlet.com in my browser and this is how I found this message board. Illinois is said to be slow in getting the bills out to people. People in NY and MI also got these bills. It's happening all over from cigs purchased online. Sad

Thanks so much for responding. I hate to be dumb, but what number do I call and what do I say? I was planning on notating on the form that I can neither confirm nor deny that I made the purchase as I have no records and the company is out of business. Is that a good idea or not? Thanks for your help.

Is it possible that the individual States General Statutes could supersede the laws regarding the internet cigarette sales moratorium?

Just found a table listing the different rates of tax per pack of cigarettes.

http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/cigarett.html

If you can figure out how many packs you have bought you should be able to calculate about how much of a tax bill you might receive. I don't know if they might add sales tax also.

So far I have gotten bills from the IL Dept. of Revenue for a "Use Tax" and then late filing penalties and late payment penalties. I think they are giving credit for taxes paid to other States. Interesting that I am paying penalties for something I didn't know I owed.

Lynn,

Are you saying that you got MORE than ONE bill?

Oh yeah! I've gotten 4 and my friend has gotten 9. It appears they got the records from the one source and will send you a bill for every shipment. I honestly don't know how many times or what I ordered from them, so I just have to wait and see. I haven't gotten a letter for the past two postal delivery days, so this may be all I get.

Mine are from the IL Dept. of Revenue. I received them all last week. The same with my friend. I am going to sign them, but I am going to include the statement "I can neither confirm nor deny this purchase as I have no records and the company is out of business." I wonder if there is some way to claim these taxes on our returns, either Federal or State, for next year.
