Hi --

It all started with this interview I made. i've posted it to start another thread here, but I'll repost so all the videos are in the same place --

My Fox News interview

How to make a brick of tobacco without building anything -

How to shred a brick of tobacco by hand -

Another method of shredding tobacco by hand -

Let me remind you all that it is 7-8 weeks before it's time to plant your tobacco seeds indoors in much of the US to be ready for spring transplanting. Get your seeds now!

Thanks for sharing Bob, now I'll return the favor by sharing my method of shredding with you and others. I tried both of your methods but I couldn't get the strands thin enough to my liking. I have a Chinese chef's knife I bought years ago that is shaped like a chopping cleaver but thinner and is as shape as a razor. It is not a cleaver though, it's a knife and should not be used for chopping. The one I have is Yan's Ultimate knife and I'm not sure if you can get that particular brand anymore but I'll bet a quick internet search will yield something similar or maybe even better. The strands are still not as thin as the bagged tobacco I use to buy but it's darn close.

My goal is to invent a powered shredder that is simple to make and use. Then I'll really have something worth sharing.

It takes a LOT of work to grow some good quality tobacco leaves... Compare it to marijuana(takes a lot of professional help and work)... But it doesnt seem cost effective to do it.

Hi --

jeffhendricks - Why do you think marihuana is hard to grow and have quality product? When I was a kid in college, most of my dormmates grew pot year round and it was fine quality and that was over 30 years ago before the breeds were improved.

Tobacco is no harder to grow than tomatoes. You'd have to try very hard to mess up a tobacco crop.

I've grown tobacco for years and made a fine product that I'm smoking today. In fact, I believe that my leaf is better than the commercial cigs, by far. I can barely smoke commercial cigs now, I call them "candy cigs" because of all the flavorings and additives.

It costs me less than $3 a lbs to grow my own tobacco (incl. the cost of kiln fermentation which really isn't needed if you are patient). Considering that RYO tobacco in my state costs almost $40 a lbs and commercial cigs end up costing more than $125 a lbs when you add it up, I'd say it's obvious growing your own tobacco turns out to be VERY cost effective!

My homegrown tobacco costs me less than 40 cents a pack, and only that much because the filter tubes are so expensive. Anyone know how to make homemade cig filter tubes?

If an ignorant 16th century peasant can grow tobacco, so can you!
