Hi, my name is Monica and I am 25 years old. I had my first cigarette when I was 16. I am still smoking today despite the fact that everyone around me wants me to quit, including my fiance. She says that she will not be in a long-term relationship with a smoker and is making me give it up by the beginning of next year. Ugh. Look people this is my choice and I should be the one to make it. I don't want to lose her over this but I mean...even if I start smoking outside she wants me to quit. I don't think it's fair. Moving on.
Those TRUTH commercials, do they show everywhere? I have noticed them less and less, but years ago they were like...IN YOUR FACE! I live in Ohio and there used to even be an ANTI-SMOKING VAN that would drive around handing out ANTI-SMOKING periphenaila. I so bad wanted to find this van and get an anti-smoking shirt and then light up right there. They go out of their way to make smokers look ignorant and evil and I am SICK of it. Anyone else have this problem?
Anyway, I hope you'll welcome me to the forum, as I am one of you (and am friends with many NON SMOKERS who agree with us) Oh yeah, and I'm a lesbian. If that's gonna be a problem, let me know up front. Thanks!
~Monica |

That last sentence sound right....Moving On.
What else will you be 'forced' to compile with if you do stop smoking?

Welcome Monica,
I'm guessing your girlfriend knew you smoked right from the beginning, so why is it a problem for her now? Did she suddenly develope AAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZMA?
I can only go by my own experience in giving this advise, avoid control freaks at all cost. I know, I was married to one, they keep testing you to see how much they can get you to bend. No other personality type can make your life more miserable except for maybe a serial killer. If you suspect she's one, then I would give her exactly 2 minutes to pack her bags and get the hell out. |

Hi Monica
Sounds like you just can't get along.
You know how bad it is for you and how much it upsets her, right? You are aware that it's a dirty, filthy, disgusting habit that harms not only you, but all those that come in contact with your smelly exhalations, right?
What right do you have to practice this vile ritual that makes you smell like the bottom of a parakeet cage? You do realize that the majority does not smoke, right? You are in a hopeless minority of pariahs and outcasts so why do you persist? Don't you want to come in from the cold? All the non-smokers are inside where it's nice and warm.
What gains could you possibly be getting from smoking?
You know, there's nothing in the Constitution that gives you the right to pollute my air.
Smoking is just not cool anymore. Wake up and smell the fresh air. It's time to butt out Monica. |

She knew I was a smoker before she moved in with me, yes. She said I could only smoke in the living room with the window open. Now, I have to give it up. Ugh! It sucks but I don't want to lose her over this. My dad has been a smoker for 30 years and even though he is not allowed to smoke in the house, my mom lets him smoke outside and they are doing just fine. I think it's rediculous especially since I pay rent at this place. I pay rent, I should be able to smoke, right?

Hi Monica,
I'm sorry for your situation. I'm a non-smoker who is fed up with the way smokers are being treated, and that's why I joined this forum. I think that unfortunately, you and your fiancee are both victims of the anti-smoking movement. I think most hostile anti-smoking sentiments are conditioned not intate. You hear things enough times, you start to believe them. The fact that something as trivial as smoking is causing any amount of stress in a relationship makes me so sad. I don't think it should ever be an issue on any level. I just wanted to say hi and wish you both the best of luck |

Agreed. One of the guys i worked with in london, had the same issue. First it was smoking.. THEN alcohol, then his gaming with his friends (who he knew and gamed with since junior high). I flat out asked him if she ever gave up anything..
He said no.. That to me is NOT what a relationship should be
Oh and welcome to the site.

Yup. If it is your place she moved into she should NOT be telling you what you can and cannot do at YOUR place.. Not to burst your bubble, but it sounds like she is a control freak... Dump her.
