“He’ll tax the pennies on your eyes,” sang the Beatles about the intrusive tax man. Now the mayor of San Francisco wants to tax your butts.
Next month, Mayor Gavin Newsom plans to ask the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to impose an excise tax of 33 cents on every pack of cigarettes sold locally, justifying it as a way of forcing smokers to pay for cleaning The City’s streets of unsightly cigarette debris. According to the mayor, discarded smokes are responsible for nearly one-quarter ($10.7 million) of the $44 million San Francisco spends annually on litter removal.
American Indians counted coup, President Lyndon Johnson was a master at counting noses and the job of census workers is to count heads. I would like to meet the San Francisco bureaucrat who, as a contributor to The City’s annual “litter audit,” so precisely counted butts.

Wow.. That much to clean the streets? HMM>> Seems we have a great way to get those prisoners in for minor crimes to work off their debt to society AND save money!
I even went to his site and said so myself...
Perhaps if many of us do so, it might change his mind. |

Mayor Gavin Newsom is a liar.

"City of San Francisco Department of Environment Litter Survey Report - July 2008
In 2007 and 2008 the City of San Francisco conducted litter audits on city streets. Working with HDR/BVA Engineering, a local San Francisco full service firm, the City audited litter on city streets. HDR/BVA in turn contracted MGM Management, a Canadian environmental consulting firm that has expertise in the area of litter audit work to design the audit to conform with their proven methodology. MGM Management has conducted over fourteen major litter audits to major North American municipalities since 2002. ...

As identified in the 2007 litter audit, gum deposits on San Francisco streets continue to be a significant issue. Gum deposits on sidewalks and roadways cause a sticky and annoying problem for pedestrians. Gum deposits accounted for 39.5% of all the small litter observed during the 2007 audit, and in 2008 a similar observation was noted. In the 2008 litter audit gum deposits were 41%% of the small litter observations..."

The article mentions the same thing by making the point that if more people litter with candy bar wrappers should they not be taxing candy bars? |

| BY his own logic then since only 10% of the litter is smokers butts, we should only be forking out for 10% of the cost. GUM chewers should be getting hit with a bigger bill.. |

The New York State Department of Taxation of Finance is preoccupied and all attention and their efforts to uphold the Cigarette Tax Law. They are actively hunting down who will try to run away from the cigarette tax. If you received a letter from the Dept. of Finance, and your name was on the purchase and shipping records of the named companies in the article provided then you are oblige to pay a Cigarette Tax.
I was thinking whether the taxes are really meant to make people stop smoking or more of money making policy for other people, kindly check the article below:
