In this day and age? What makes 'this day and age' different from the previous 'day and age?' I'd say in 'this day and age' we're being relentlessly propagandized by a bunch of nanny control freaks filling their pockets with smokers' money.
I've enjoyed smoking all my life, going on 54 years and I'm not going to let a bunch of thugs bully me into submission. Their ideal of a proper lifestyle stinks to high heaven.
My crop is hanging in the shed curing and it is tax free. So what am I going to do with all the money I saved, you can bet your booty I'm not going to spend at places that support this anti-smoking lunacy. |

When I wrote that about the ones who can't quit, I almost added "and the ones who don't want to quit". But I didn't, BIG mistake. You are right, there are people who don't want to quit, I need to quit but I don't WANT to. I need to quit because there are a lot of downsides to smoking, expense, burns, broncitis, and that nagging urge to get away from any place I'm forced to go but can't smoke, which is almost everywhere now. We used to go out to eat 2 or 3 times a week, not any more. I really really enjoy a smoke after dinner. You could relax smoke a cig and enjoy yourself. That pleasure is gone now in public.
However, I don't want to quit and I resent to the nth degree anyone telling me how to live my life. Smoking is a legal personal choice. The only reason there are wars is because of people who can't let other people live the way they choose to. The my way or the highway gang. I'm not out on the beaches crusading to close the Florida beaches down because I don't believe anyone should take the chance of getting skin cancer from the sun. Imagine when there are huge hordes of people protesting beach goers, and closing the beaches in the name of "health". Florida would fold since getting skin cancer causing sun is their number one source of income. Do you think all the sun lovers would like that? Making a legal activity off limits because it's bad for your health.
Anyway the part of my post about the reasons for not quiting was not the point, you all missed the whole point of my post. It was to call attention to the stupidity of these rediculous taxes. What the consequinces are down the line. And the fact that the higher-ups seem oblivious to the fact of the economic impact. |

I did not miss the point of your post, I agree with all of it except for the one comment.
As for the higher-ups, I don't underestimate them. It is much easier to gain power when a society is in peril. That's when people start looking for a savior and guess who's gonna save them with "free" social handouts. |

| fight4freedom Thanks for the link. my husband and I signed the petition and I sent it also to some of my friends. we use to go out every Sunday evening and eat at Cracker Barrell but since 1-2 of this year we have not done so. we also went out every Friday night with another couple. We have not done that either since the smoking ban. I believe if enough people banned together and stood up for their rights we could put a stop to all this BS. I also am sick and tired of the propaganda that is on TV about how we smokers stink. I am sure you have probably seen some of those ads. Mom in the car holding her nose cause dad is passing a lethal gas from his cig. and the other one where all the people in the restaurants claps about all the fresh air that is being served since the smokers are gone. I did not know that a person could eat air and that it was for sale. This is like salt on a wound. Now my grandchildren go around holding their nose and say Nana don't pass gas. This is not funny and it is discrimination at its worse. The gov. is too far up everybody's arse. They are too big for their britches and they need to be brought down to size. I am with you freedom ain't free and we have to fight for it. |

One of the things most interesting to me about all this anti-smoking b/s is that smokers are now treated worse than the black community was treated during the height of segregation. Prior to the civil rights movement black folks could still go to bars, restaurants, etc., within the black community where they could eat, drink, dance, smoke and have a good time. Eventually, laws were passed to bring some sort of equality to our country and these laws benefitted the 12 or 13 percent of the population that was suffering the effects of segregation. But now, with complete impunity and devoid of any scientific proof, laws are being past against at least 25 percent of the population who smoke and these laws are much more degrading than the laws supporting segregation. All the tobacco nazis out there who are overweight had better wake up - you are next! Since obesity places a far greater strain on the medical facilities of the country than do smokers, it's just a matter of time until you become the target!
