Hi All,

I just bought a new car, my first ever. The last car I drove is almost a decade old. That's why I'm seeking your advice; I don't know what's standard operating procedure these days and I don't want to look foolish. In getting to know my new car, I explored every nook and cranny, well almost. Lo and behold I open the ashtray, and not only is there no ashtray, there's a small sticker with the no-smoking symbol on it. I was beyond furious and of course immediately pried it off. As a nonsmoker, this upset me greatly; I can't imagine how judgemental it would seem to a smoker. I want to tear someone a new one over this, write a complaint letter, take some action to let whoever is responsible for this know that it is unacceptable to try to restrict my freedom with my own private property. It might not seem like much, but I just can't stand by anymore and watch everything I love and believe in being gutted by people who want to dictate how everyone else lives. My question is, do you think I should complain? If so, to whom? I don't want to misdirect my anger. Do you think I'm overreacting/misinterpreting?

Nah, that just covers them legally - there probably have been people who used the non-ashtray as an ashtray and burned up or marked up the area and wanted it fixed.

You have to put warning labels on everything nowadays...

I don't consider a company thinking I'm stupid because they put the "don't put this on your head- you'll suffocate" signs on plastic bags...They put that there most likely because someone did suffocate, sued the company for not putting a warning label on the bag - not to do it....aargh.....these are anti-Darwin Award regulations.

It's a CYA world.

It's a Toyota Corolla. I'm finding it to be a great little car and am really enjoying it.

You make an excellent point Glister. There are warning labels on everything these days. I'm just hypersensitive to this issue and anti-smoking political correctness. I am no fan of warning labels either. I don't think we should have "prevent human stupidity warning labels". If people act in a stupid manner and get hurt that should be their tough luck.

Then someone needs to educate the car company that a 'no smoking' sign does not mean there is no ashtray installed.

Even when i have rented cars where smoking WAS allowed, ash trays were not included... Heck my 05 Dodge neon had no ash tray. To me it seems, they are trying to passivly push no smoking in cars.

That's exactly my problem with the whole thing. They have absolutely no business to do so. I'm sick of being pushed, passively or otherwise. I can't imagine I'm alone.

Talk to the dealer. If you just got the car from him he will be more than happy to sort you out.
Cigar lighters and ashtrays in cars are seldom used so car manufactures are phasing them out.
It's a case of keeping costs down not so much anti smoking.
The no smoking sign is a little much and completely unnecessary. I'd go so far as to say it's silly.

Unless of course if you are leasing the car. Leased cars don't belong to you so ..... if they wanted to they could put a Pro Life sticker in the car. Rolling Eyes

You're a nonsmoker who sympathizes with smokers? I'm amazed. I don't think I've ever met anyone like that, and I've especially never heard of a nonsmoker who would seek out a forum that advocates smokers' rights and post on it.

Kudos to you.

Also, I can understand why manufacturers want to cut down on costs by phasing out cigar lighters and ashtrays... I don't like to use built-in ashtrays anyway because when I go to pop it out to empty it I end up spilling ashes all over the place. I just use a coke can or one of those ashtray things that fits in your cupholder that you can get at walmart.

Anyway. The sticker was too much, I agree. But don't fret too much about the lack of an ashtray. Just work around it.
