Probably in their screwed up view of smoking. I'm assuming they would say that the parking lot is their property and your car is on it.

Better would be to go have a talk with whoever implemented this in the company and ask them why they don't have a ban on every single vehicle coming on their property, since this is what is causing the Cancer epedemic and not tiny whiffs from someone smoking.

You'll probably have to line up another job tho, cause you'll point out how idiotic that persons reasoning capacity is.

They don't own my car, private property and they don't insure while it's on their property - loophole? Wink

Many businesses are banning smoking inside cars on their property.
Technically it's your private property but technically the car is parked on their private property.
Catch-22

I see a lot of this in my area, mostly affecting employees only.
For a business to restrict smoking from their customers, they would knock out 20%+ of their consumer base.

Do they actually own the parking lot though, or is it leased land?

It is sad that the OP even needed to ask this question. That's how perverse our world is. How hard would it be for there to be a designated smoking area in every workplace? To make smokers miserable and make them guess and feel like outcasts in their own work areas, well that's just stupid. Such an utter lack of respect is unconscionable. Who makes the smoking policies in workplaces? Do workplaces have to follow a set of rules or are they subject to discretion?

Depends on the workplace. Military has all sorts of regulations, like 50 feet from a building, NOT in a normal pathway, covered, must have at least 2 ways to collect garbage......

Agreed.
An even worst case of scenario is when the employer is willing to provide it and some even willing to pay to have it enclosed but not allowed to do so.

Companies should expect that in every 10 employees they have, 3 of them are smokers. So the point is... there should always be an allocated smoking area... always!

They should expect it, but these days they seem to be actively trying to get rid of us.
