Tanning beds have officially climbed to the top rung of the carcinogen list. That's ironic, considering that some people -- including myself -- found tanning beds helpful in quit-smoking efforts due to their antidepressant effect. Now that they have been officially classified as deadly, I can sit here and wait to get skin cancer brought on by my "smokefree lifestyle" days, during which I laid in tanning beds frequently and kept a "healthy tan" year-round because it made me feel better.

It seems like every single thing that makes a person feel better is carcinogenic. In fact, you don't even have to look at the list. Just ask yourself, "Do I feel a little happier after doing this?" And if the answer is yes, you can pretty much safely assume the activity is bad for your health, if not fatal.

The predictability of it is uncanny. It's as if enjoyment itself is carcinogenic. Maybe "happy chemicals" circulating in the brain are the real root cause of cancer, and all these other things are merely triggers for their deadly release.

That's one good reason I don't bother trying to quit again. Over the course of my life, I've learned that if I don't smoke, I will do something else to fill that empty hole, and that "something else" may end up causing its own set of problems. It just seems to be a universal law that every single thing that makes you happy in life eventually extracts a price.

Here's a partial quote:

TUESDAY, July 28 (HealthDay News) -- The International Agency for Research on Cancer on Tuesday moved tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category -- "carcinogenic to humans," according to a new report.

Previously, the agency had classified sunlamps and tanning beds as "probably" carcinogenic, so the move puts the devices a notch higher in terms of risk. It also echoes calls by some U.S. experts to place tougher warnings and restrictions on tanning bed use.

"The use of tanning beds can be deleterious to your health and we hope to encourage governments to formulate restrictions and regulations for the use of tanning beds," said report coauthor Beatrice Secretan, from the Cancer Monograph Working Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France. The Agency is part of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The first priority of the WHO is to restrict the use of tanning beds by those under 18, Secretan said. "If controls are put in place it will reduce the risks of the users or deter people from using them," she said...

Perhaps lost in translation.
What they actually said was, if you feel happy and look happy, them somebody will have to put a stop to it.

I remember a running joke about religion that God's purpose is to look for people having a good time and try to put a stop to it. But what the lifestyle nazi's are doing is the exact same thing. It's like Puritanism without any hope for salvation.

I judge a tree by its fruit. The fruit of the anti-everythings has brought bitterness and misery and made life worse for everyone. I think they're like the dementors in Harry Potter, they suck every possible joy out of a person. So for Harry Potter fans, what's our Patronus going to be? For non-Harry fans, how can we find the antidote to their poison? I feel a real sense of urgency that I've never felt before. Things seem to be changing so fast; the lifestyle nazi's seem to be gaining more and more power very quickly. And people who just want to live their lives in peace without excessive interference are losing their voice.

Here's what Mark Twain thought about the health nazi's of his time: http://www.forces.org/articles/files/markt.htm

MORAL STATISTICIAN

I don't want any of your statistics. I took your whole batch and lit my pipe with it. I hate your kind of people. You are always ciphering out how much a man's health is injured, and how much his intellect is impaired, and how many pitiful dollars and cents he wastes in the course of ninety-two years' indulgence in the fatal practice of smoking; and in the equally fatal practice of drinking coffee; and in playing billiards occasionally; and in taking a glass of wine at dinner, etc., etc., etc. You never see but one side of the question. You are blind to the fact that most old men in America smoke and drink coffee, although, according to your theory, they ought to have died young; and that hearty old Englishmen drink wine and survive it, and portly old Dutchmen both drink and smoke freely, and yet grow older and fatter all the time. And you never try to find out how much solid comfort, relaxation and enjoyment a man derives from smoking in the course of a lifetime, (and which is worth ten times the money he would save by letting it alone,) nor the appalling aggregate of happiness lost in a lifetime by your kind of people from not smoking.

I love that quote. It gives me hope that these people are nothing new. We have survived them before and will again.

Oh, these people are new, but they are new like the younger generation pushing their Rites of Passage by asserting themselves against the standing generation (us) so that they do not feel owned or controlled by us. And this seems to be so because, notice how the antis always claim that us smokers are 'invading their spaces' and 'are trying to control them'? But then after achieving their demands against the cultural practices of the standing generation, they then turn to attacking us as people in order to finish the job.

The antis often feel like someone's belligerent younger brother or sister.

There is another quote of his where he goes into a tirade about how anti sucks the joy out of life. That's the one I really wanted to post but couldn't find it.

Anti is nothing new, they go back to the 1600 when tobacco first appeared. The devils weed, imagine getting your head chopped off for smoking. Since then and if I remember correctly, anti's emerge every 80 years or so to reek havoc for about 25 years. When you're in the middle of one of these cycles you think it will never end but I'm banking on history repeating itself. One thing anti can't seem to fathom, there's no way to make tobacco disappear from existence, it's here to stay and people will find a way to enjoy it... even when there's a chance of getting their heads chopped off.

The media is having another feeding frenzy with the tanning shit, so you can kiss another industry goodbye, although I have no idea how many jobs they provide.
