This may or may not have been discussed on this site already (I'm New) But Im outraged at the stripping away of rights in this country ( a country by the way that was largely built on Tobacco). I'm not even a business owner and I'm outraged for them! Just say I own a small corner bar thats been there forever, Larry, and Joe have been going there for 20 years after they get out of work ( or maybe I should say after they've finished paying taxes for the day) They sit, they grab a beer then reach in their front left shirt pocket for that pack of Marlboros, grab one, light up and unwind for a while before heading home for the night. Now Ive known these guys forever their friends of mine, I know where they work, and I know they work their asses of all day. Im glad that I own an establishment where people like that can come in and know that no ones going to take away the first moment of relaxation they've had in 8 or more hours! In comes the health department. "You can't smoke in here anymore!"
"But wait a minute, I told them they could, I own this place" "So what!, I'ts not fair to the people who don't smoke to have to breath in those toxins!" "Yea well those whiny douche bags aren't the crowd that I cater to, these hard working gentleman right here are the guys who make it possible for me to pay my bills and state taxes!" "Oh well if anyone is caught smoking here anymore you'll be paying more than state taxes buddy you'll be paying outrageous fines, and you may even get your business shut down!" And that's how it is in the "Home of the free" BULLSHIT!!!!!! Oh, but at our states (Rhode Island) only gambling facility there is a whole separate facility for gamblers that smoke. Guess which side makes the most money! That's right. We have to fight this! There has to be a way for smokers to be more vocal! Anti smoking groups can get all the advertising they could ever ask for! There has got to be a loophole in this public smoking ban! Wait, that's it! "Public" What If I turned my corner bar into a private club for smokers only! Where I could charge the members say...... 1 cent per month in dues. Would that work? I'll bet that I would make ten times more money in this private club than in my public non-smoking facility. Think about that. When there is a will there is a way! Oh, and this one is funny, what if I turned my bar into a church and started my own "smokers religion" and all of my patrons would just be members of my religion. Wow now that would be bigger than Catholosism in this country! I don't know but somethings got to give! I'll bet that if the smoking bans were lifted, tax revenues in this country would shoot right up!

You're in RI? How are people there buying their cigarettes now, are they taking the 20 minute ride to buy in CT/MA?

Curious, with the highest state tax in the land, if people are actually paying it there - living so close to a border [wherever they live] I would think it's got to be killing the Convenience Store industry.

Massachusettes isn't much cheaper. You're paying 8.06 here for a pack of Marlboros you pay 7.50 there and Mass doesn't take coupons. Whereas I get tons and tons of 1.00 off coupons for Marlboro I never pay the full price in RI. Mass passed this retarded law that retailers can't except coupons if they discount the cigerettes below their state minimum. Had they not passed this law they could have been making Kajillions in state taxes due to RIs rediculous taxation laws. And im telling you, I don't even want to pay this state any taxes. Just for the fact that im in the lower middle class maybe even below that earnings wise (because I've been laid off) and due to these high taxes I cant afford to save and move out of this "mouse trap" of a state! Anyway IDK how much cigarettes are in CT I live on the other side of the state. But If they are cheap enough I just might take a trip. But again if I ran out of coupons, with these taxes, It would be worth it for me to drive to New Hampshire!
