Does anyone know what's going on with the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act of 2009? When is it supposed to be debated in the Senate? Considering how bad off the states are and how desperate they are for their tax money, is there any chance of beating it this time?
Even if you don't buy cigs over the Internet, this bill can affect you because it creates a situation where there is no escape from whatever the government decides to do, such as banning cigs, making them unpalatable via the FDA regs, taxing through the roof, etc. Turning postal workers into the cig police will have far-reaching implications beyond just shutting down Internet sales.
People don't worry as much as they should about legislation that doesn't personally affect them, not realizing a situation is being set up that definitely will affect them in the future.
For example, some countries are putting cigs under the counter. If they do that in the US, it creates a situation where putting gory photos on the cig packs is more feasible because the cig packs will not be visible to the general public.
The implications of turning postal workers into the cig police are even more far-reaching, as far as creating a scenario where it will be easier for the government to inflict even worse nightmares on us in the future. |

| Violates ICC to the nth degree. It sets precedents that would hamper all trade between states and increase transporting costs without benefit to the consumers. It would be defeated in a Supreme Court Appeal, if it's passed.... Lord love our Founding Fathers... |

What's scary is that I think virtually all Canadian provinces have done this for about 2-3 years now! I've even heard numerous European countries have started to require cigarettes to be displayed under the counter, though I'm not sure off the top of my mind which countries in Europe have passed this law. I also wouldn't be surprised if some European Union anti-smoking lawmakers were already trying to require all EU member countries that don't have such a law to do so, via EU legislation. |

What do you suppose the government will require of Smokers Outlet stores? Will they have to put up cabinets all around the store and place all their tobacco products inside the cabinets? Will they have to cover the outside of the store in a plain brown wrapper, like companies do when they are sending sex toys and pornography through the mail? Maybe they could just put a huge black box (with no advertising) over each store, with a single door monitored by the police so no one under legal smoking age can enter.  |

| I am tired of having to pay more and more for my Marlboro Reds ($8 a pack in Arizona!) I'd quit or switch to cheaper brands if I could but I like smoking too much. It relaxes me and Marlboros especially taste really really good, plus I think it's cool to smoke and I have been for twenty years. My doctor says I am healthy as a horse and my dad smokes a pack of Camels or Marlboro Reds every day and has for over fifty years-doc says he is also very healthy. I tnink non smokers are wussies. Smokng is more masculine than feminine and I have never had a problem getting a date even tho' I smoke a pack a day. (Of course, I'm sure my new Mustang GT doesn't hurt my dating life any!) Anway, I'm tired of being treated as a second class citizen. I smoke outside at work and people even complain about that! Where I work you can't even smoke in your own car in the parking lot! This is ridiculous and is getting wa out of hand. People need to focus on the real problems like Iraq, Afghanistan, the econoymy and put there energies there. Leave us smokers alone! |

They are focusing on the economy - they are taxing the crap out of smokers to off set costs of everything that comes down the pike.
$8 a pack? you should Make your own....that's crazy-money. |
