Well, we wouldn't be doing anything worse than what the televangelists do. All they're doing is selling people a sense of hope that is manufactured out of thin air. They get rich off people's desperation and they enjoy the added benefit of government tax shelters for their money.

We could always limit membership to people over 18. No minors allowed. That should satisfy the whiney-baby do-gooders who worry about "the chiiiildren."

I'll be the prophet.. Tonight an angel is going to visit me and reveal some important information regarding the tobacco plants that grew in the Garden of Eden. And if that makes me crazy, well, the Jehovah's witnesses and Mormons are crazy as well.

Oh most holy violet, prophet of tobacco, whose all knowing wisdom has brought us closer to the One on High; the One who has given us this great plant, tobacco, so that we may better see the truth.

Tell us holy violet how we may fight the evil-doers (better known as the antis) who are trying to keep us from enlightenment?

(Can we use the phrase: Let he who is without sin cast the first stone?).

I'm willing to go along with it. What really counts is how fervently we believe. As far as I can tell, there is no other qualification necessary for the establishment of a religion. You just need a visiting angel, a sacred text, and a bunch of people who agree to go along with it.

We don't even have to be original. Most religions have plagiarized their stories from previous religions. So all we have to do is choose one of the forgotten gods from ancient history, and resurrect him or her for our modern-day purposes.

But we all have to really, really, really believe. If we don't have complete, utter faith and believe as hard as we can, it won't work. Wink

And if the antis don't back off their campaign to wipe tobacco off the face of the planet, we will have no choice but to declare a religious jihad. It will be our moral duty to wipe THEM off the face of the earth to cleanse the planet.

we don't need a religion,we need an organization similar to AARP or the NAACP. There are enough of us (twenty percent is low) but that would be sixty million. Think the gutless politicians would dare antagonize an organization of that magnitude?

Exactly. Elderly people didn't have any political clout until they formed AARP. Now they have all kinds of power.

I used to like AARP but I'm a little miffed at them now because they supported the SCHIP tax. Since so many AARP members are retired, they had all day to organize and lobby. I can sympathize with the fact that many older people are raising their grandchildren on a fixed income and need help with the insurance, but I can't forgive them for pushing the tax for this benefit off on me.

So now every time they send me a request for a donation, I send the card back with a note telling them, "Sorry, can't donate due to cigarette tax increase." I thoroughly enjoy doing that. People need to realize these taxes eventually come back on them, no matter how hard they work to get the program put in place without having to personally pay for it.

Probably the biggest obstacle that smokers face as a group is just the fact that we have been so thoroughly shamed, most smokers are ashamed to step forward and publicly claim membership in the group. Instead, many smokers sit there feeling guilty and hoping they can somehow change and not be affected by smoking-related issues any more. In the meantime, years go by and the situation gets worse for us.

It's sort of like all the poor people who take great pride in voting Republican, merely because they hope to one day be part of the wealthy group who benefit most from Republican policies. They would rather identify with people who are financially better off than themselves, than admit which social class they really belong to and vote accordingly.

Before anyone flames me, I'm just talking about the traditional view that the Republican Party benefits the wealthy people more, while the Democrats benefit the middle and lower classes. I'm not making any sweeping statements about anyone's ability to "make it" in life or why they don't. I'm just saying that most people who believe they'll be rich some day won't really make it, so they would come out ahead by voting in favor of policies that help their situation the way it is right now.

All I can say is the shame campaign has been so effective, it would be hard for most smokers to get past their own feelings of inferiority in order to demand better treatment.
