I just read this article and I am a little confused.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-06-11-tobacco-control-bill_N.htm
Does this just mean that they can no longer label cigarettes "light"? I don't see what the point of that is. For instance, I smoke Camel Lights...are they going to have to change the name? Will I soon be asking for Camel "Blues"?
Also, they are having a good old knock-down, drag-out fight in the comments section so feel free to jump in if you are feeling scrappy. lol |

I would also expect that soon the packages and cartons will be un-labeled (big push in Australia for this right now). No markings at all that would refer to a brand name. Just bold print warnings and pictures of diseased organs and limp penises. |

I'm wondering how long it will be before we get the gory pictures on the cig packs. Right now, we've got the soap bubble commercials and other relatively tame messages. Should we place bets on when the gore will start?
I particularly enjoy the bubble commercial because it implies that we are all going to wake up in a G-rated Walt Disney movie. Obviously nothing bad can ever happen with all those soap bubbles floating around harmlessly. |

| Another industry is just waiting to jump out at you-the one that will manufacture cases to put your cigs in that hide the gore pics. Will probably have pics of smokers engaged in all sorts of private enjoyable activity-some geared to men will have old fashioned pinups of hot babes, guys for the women, sports, etc; watch and see. People who have no intention of being forced to quit will not put up with looking at this crap. |

The more the antis try to make adults quit smoking, the more they reinforce the rebellious determination of people who don't want to follow other people's rules.
Coercive tactics have a way of backfiring. It wouldn't surprise me if they were actually reducing the quit rate with all the strong-arm tactics. If they think the downturn in sales is a reliable indicator that more people are quitting, they underestimate the number of people who have a large stash of tobacco hidden in their closet and won't need to buy more any time soon. |

Runamok, your response made me lol. Unfortunatly, as we all know it is probably not far from the truth. I called my mom when I read this and I told her that gross out pics are coming. She was like "Let em try it...I'll just put them in my pretty leather cigarette case!"
I think darkseid is right...someone will come up with covers and I think we will see a boom in the old fashioned cig cases once they start to implement this crap. I'm surprised they aren't pushing this on other industries as well...can you imagine what would happen if they applied the same logic to hot dogs? |

This kind of strategy could have been used years ago to curb all kinds of dangerous activities, but the people fighting those activities were sane. Hard-core antis have lost all touch with reality and don't feel any obligation to respect the normal standards of human decency. |

| Watching the news last night and seeing the time table for this does not give me any hope our country is heading for brighter waters any decade soon. |
