Hello all,

Im having an issue at the building I live in. Apparently, some of my neighbours are complaining about my smoking. I want to find out if there's a portable unit that can filter cigarette smoke and actually works. I guess I could put my fan in the window and set it on exhaust. The only problem with that is winters coming soon Sad

If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Tom. I have spent a few hours researching this subject. This is the product I came up with.
http://www1.shopping.com/xPC-Hunter_30065

I just purchased it at overstock.com for a mere fraction of the Ionic breeze..........I really didnt want to shell out $300. dollars. This unit has a 4 pass cleaning system. This should allow me to smoke both cigarettes and the type of tobacco thats not legal here in the states. That my friend is why I cant tell my neighbours to go [freak] themself., even though I would like nothing more then to do just that!

Im hoping that this cures the problem, currently using a small Honeywell unit I just purchased at the Home Depot for 40 dollars US. It seems to do the job even though I have to stick my face in the bloody thing. The Hunter has better square' coverage.

Usually, you can clear up these childish issues if you throw some $ into it. What really rankles me is that whomever complained didnt even have the courtesy to talk to me first. Instead they went right to the landlord.

Nice!

I'll be posting here in the future, as this is probably going to become an issue for other people as well.

Don't know about portable but HEPA-filtered, ventilation systems are rated top-notch by ventilation/refrigeration engineers and shoot the fraudulent SHS argument chock full of holes.

Right now they are expensive but wih all the nonsensical stupidity going on the price is sure to drop.

There would be no need for smoking bans if separately, ventilated, enclosed, designated smoking rooms(SVE DSRs) were the norm and to which admission by anti-smokers would be prohibited.

In other words, smoke bans should and eventually will work both ways.

Why? Discrimination
(as in "Whites only", homosexuals, etc, and now, coming very soon near you, smokers).

The former were/are being overturned, same will apply to smokers consuming a totally legal, lucrative, product.

I used to use one of these. They work pretty well. Problem is they aren't quite made for cigarettes (at least not mine).

I used mine about 4 months and then it started to not work anymore. The filter started to not clean the air anymore. And the filter was rated to be changed every 2 years. Guess I wasted money on that one...

I did a lot of research on the topic and ended up buying 2 inexpensive ($40-60), portable HEPA units (Hamilton Beach and Bionaire). The ionic breeze is junk according to consumer reports (read reviews on epinions.com and amazon.com carefully).

The HEPA units work well for a while but the filters do get dirty much faster than advertised on the box and after a few months the whole thing smells like an ashtray. One way to help is to replace the carbon filters often (buy carbon stock filters for cheap ($10 online) or at a hardware store that you cut into the right shape). Also putting 2 layers of carbon filters before the main HEPA filter ensures that more of the tars are adsorbed to the carbon filter and not the HEPA filter. Check the CADR (clean air delivery rate) rating of the unit on the box or at cadr.org -the bigger the number the better (and a higher price!)

Last, since the HEPA filter needs to be changed more often, shop for a unit where the replacement filters are cheaper ($20-30, look on amazon.com or online for replacements, not the manufacturer) . Round filters (common in Honeywell units) are usually the most expensive.

Don't get fooled into buying ozone generators, ozone to be effective has to be used in toxic concentrations (EPA website).

If you have the $$$ to spend the best rated portable air cleaner is the Friedrich C-90A which uses a washable electrostatic precipitator, but costs around $400-500. Or get a whole house unit you connect to your forced heating unit.

The best thing is to open the windows and circulate air, but that gets hard on the heating bill. I often put a box fan in the window for 10-15 min at the end of the evening to pull out most of the smoke.

People also say that putting a cut apple out or a bowl of vinegar controls the smell, but being a chemist I don't see how that can work other than by power of suggestion. Or you can mask the smell with incense/scented candles or febreeze.

There's discrimination, and then there's just plain common sense. Why should I let undesirables move onto my property, when I know there going to bring in a negative quality, and lower my property value?

It's only 'a negative quality', as long as inbred, moronic people, such as yourself, believe it to be. You have been conditioned, i.e. brainwashed. Get a life and go away.

Hey - you pay rent too right! Sure if you looked and smelled around enough you'd find something you don't care for about your neighbors.
If they aren't into community life they should buy a single home.

You have rights too you know. I say Feck the ignorant neighbors and enjoy your life[/quote]
