NJ back Taxes on Cigarettes:
I too have bought cigarettes from Smokers Den, the supervisor there says that from 7-06 on they were made to supply all sale information to NJ, she says they do not have any information before that time, they have mailed copies of all our invoices that she says the State has but it is a heavy payment. They are not telling you what you owe because they hope that you will go back to the beginning if you want to believe the women from Smokers Den and make payments back to 2002. I wish I truly knew if all this is on the up and up because I am mailing my heafty payment in the next couple of days. Smokers Den tells us it was our responsiblity to know our own State laws and that they are not libel. |

She was assured it was private. Well, so much for that. I feel we should have been notified by Smokers Den that they were advising the State. I do have one question, how come not everyone received this notice. I know several people who purchased from Smokers Den who did not receive notice from State? Are we the lucky ones? I honestly do not have enough mon ey to send them.[/b] |

I was also not told by Smokers Den that they were reporting to the state, Karen is the supervisor there, she had no response, but of course we know they didn't tell us because they would have lost the business. The only advise I can give you is to call the 800 number on the letter and ask them what to do if you don't have the money, I know they accept partial payments but they will access penalties and interest on the balance. Don't know why some people didn't get the letters, everyone here that ordered from them did get it.
You don't have to pay for 2009 and only back to 2006 but like I said I was ordering for other people and had to pay for everyone, some gave me their money but not everyone. The State doesn't offer much information nor Smokers Den so its pretty much a guessing game. |

| Thanks for your response. I had called Smokers Den on several occasions and each time got a different answer. i.e. they had no records for 2007 computer crash. Yet when I spoke to supervisor she informed me that they had no records to send us but forwarded them to state. I still have not received anything from them and requested info as soon as I received notice. Trying to piece things together here, but am very nervous if I miss anything what is going to happen. Called amnesty hotline and was informed by 2 people that Smokers Den - and they asked if I purchased from Smoker Den I did not offer info - has not provided them with any info. Will you bring me cigarettes in jail? Dot |

They did send us copies of all our invoices except for 2007 because of the crash I guess we're suppose to guess for that year, but I sent payment for just the invoices from 7-2006 to the end of 2008 and pretty much left 2007 except for 2 months out. When I called the state she said if I didn't have invoices to just guess and be sure to make some kind of payment by 6-15. Wish we just knew what info the state really had. Just frustrating......
I too have been really nervous about all this, don' t want to end up with a lein against my house and wouldn't put it past the state. (Also the state women told me they usually have the amnesty every 4 or five years so maybe the chance will come around again if this ends up being an exact count) Just love some of these people saying ah don't do anything..... |

Hi again,
I did not receive the invoices and called Smokers Den several times, they said they went out???? I tried figuring out how many cigarettes I smoke per day and extended it out. I stated with 1/06 though 12/08....boy I smoke alot.
I tried to my best, but if I did not send in the correct amount, then I hope they offer some sort of payment plan along with penalties, etc. I don't want a lien on my house either, but......I really would like to know if this is legal. I did call an attorney friend and he just stated to put down on check "to the best of my knowledge". Amnesty group really no help in fact one person stated they really didn't train us. Thanks. I too would like to know what the real story is, do they have figures on us or is it let's take what we get to help the budget and if they don't get enough will there be a witch hunt? But as I said before a lot of people I know did not receive notice....the gal the introduced me to Smokers Den is one of them. Oh boy, do not feel good about this.

| Hi, maybe I am venting, but what really bothers me is that our governor is doing this when the economy is at its worse. How many people who are out of work received this notice. I know I was out of work for over a year and boy did that kill me, health insurance alone did me in. Working now for half my pay, but it's a job. And I still don't think what he is doing is legal. It makes me laugh when he who was riding without seatbelts, offered $4,000 to towns to have police work overtime to ticket people without seatbelts.....sorry Kathy, I said I was venting. |

| Dot you sound as stressed as I was over this, all we can do is pay something and move on if in the end they come after us then we will have to deal with it then, I refuse to let Corzine control my life and my stress level, since he is getting voted out we will have to wait to see what the next guy wants to do. I to called a lawyer, he said that we really couldn't fight it, the state says that we are suppose to know our own laws and if we don't its our fault, if everyone is required in this state to pay these taxes then we should too. Though I do believe down the road if they do come after me I will fight it then with hopefully a group I can get together that also has been a part of this in a civil suit based on lack of information supplied by the state and my rights to know what I am being charged for. Power sometimes can be in numbers. I will supply you cig if it comes to jail time but I did hear they are very cheap in jail and just think we are paying for the inmates smokes. Don't mind the venting at all...............Kathy |

Kthy, thanks for the laugh, I needed that!!!!!! Yes I am stressed out, but will try to let it go as it may be years before we hear anything. Can you imagine all paper work the State will be going though. Smokers Den said about 14000 customers in NJ and that is just 1 company,
I will vote for anyone who runs against our governor!!
I guess it is time to clean my house, so it will be clean for the state, while I enjoy cheap cigs!!! Will be back later, have a good one. It has been nice meeting you and please keep in touch. Dot |

Kathy, FYI
Was speaking to someone regarding the notice. He stated that most of his friends buy in indian reservations, and not 1 of them received this notice. I know that you stated your friends did receive it, I am the only one of my group who has received it. Why couldn't I be so lucky with the lottery. Would love to hear from others. |
