Interesting thought proposed by the author. People are definitely more stressed nowadays and they have nothing to fall back on to relieve that stress. They're also more hostile, especially ex smokers...who, I'm sure hate smokers because they themselves fell for the bs and quit, when they really didn't want to.
You might even blame the rise in obesity on the anti-smoking drive. |

The guy hit on a point I never thought of before...a correlation between rising suicide rates and smoking prohibition hysteria.
...and come to think of it...my smoking relaxation..... may well have dissuaded me from murdering one or two unsuspecting obnoxious types along the road of life...
I love it! You mean the Pope is human? He'll probably be fired from the Popehood for this. |

There is a definite link between the decline in smoking and the rise in the obesity rate. I have been pointing that out to my legislators for quite awhile now, because the fact is that most people gain at least some weight, and many become obese when they quit smoking. I have never seen a chart with those two rates shown together, probably because it would highlight the pointlessness of harassing people to quit.
I once quit for 10 years and the only way I could control my anxiety and depression and avoid the obesity trap was to exercise a couple of hours a day. Most people aren't willing to spend that much time exercising, though.
The reason why ex-smokers often turn into the worst antis is because you have to thoroughly brainwash yourself to give up something you enjoy that much. In my case, I would repeat things to myself like, 'I will die instantly if I smoke one cigarette,' or , 'I will get cancer instantly if smoke touches me.' That's what it takes to reprogram your brain so that you no longer have any detectable urge to smoke.
Looking back, it all seems like a big joke. |
