My husband works in a place that has a tobacco shop, and after April 1st, they stopped carrying all RYO tubes, tobacco, papers, everything. They stuck it all in a box, and wrote it off as a loss. Then handed my husband a moving sized box of about 400 packages of cigarette papers and 100 boxes tubes they were planning to throw out.
Yes, it was a bit like Christmas, now that you mention it.
I've been busy sampling tubes, and here's my take on the ones we got:
Premier - the absolute worst of the lot. To me, it tastes chemically, and the filter is garbage.
Twister Regular Cigarette Tubes - not bad, but nothing to write home about. Not a major chemical-ish taste to them.
Ramback Elite - I like these. The filter seems pretty hardy, and there's no chemical taste at all.
Silver Tip Tubes (Charbon) from Gizeh - I like these, though you can ever so slightly tell its a Carbon Filter. Seems to me the lightest flavor of any tubes I've tried.
Vera Cruz Nocturne, Elegante, and Midnight - also surprisingly light, and I loved these tubes even though I was determined to not like them due to the pretentiousness. Very clean taste to them. |

Wow...what a lucky break your husband got with that, for sure! :)
I've always used the premier tubes as well and never noticed a problem, but then again I am still very new to MYO and haven't had much of a chance yet to try different tubes in conjunction with the tobaccos.
This is good info for comparing and perhaps trying a few different types of tubes, though...much appreciated! |

I've mentioned having the darndest time finding a supplier of cig tubes that weren't loaded with incense/soap/detergent/potassium residues. I've bought tubes from two stores 18 miles apart, yet both purchases had this problem and it seems to be either the same owner or the same local distributor/wholesaler. The thing I've noticed is that both purchases have coupons with the same expiration date, August, 2008, already past.
Last night I Finally found a shop in Hollywood (CG Tobacco) that had clean Gambler tubes, though one of two boxes I picked up does have a coupon that expired Dec. 2008. I knew this was not an impossible task because I used to smoke Laredo. This was a do-it-yourself RYO kit with a can of tobacco/tubes and filter plugs and a branded cigarette injector sold separately back in 1971 and was available again about 15 years ago, manufactured by B & W. I'm pretty sure the Laredo tobacco was the same as used in Viceroy cigarettes, but it was much fresher for being in a sealed can.
Does anybody know why the papers and tubes are not packaged in a sealed box the same as ready-mades with the plastic wrap? This sure would help. |

The sad thing is that I can't give a you one-stop-shopping reference:
- Tobacco + tube: Rowland Platinum (although I prefer Rowland Gold) from Trisha's Cafe (D&R) and light tubes. TGS Natural from LBSS (with a FF tube) is another option.
- Machine: The Gambler from pipesandcigars.com
- Tubes: either Zen lights or Ramback/Windsail Elites

I prefer rolling papers and a hand roll machine or roll box. Both are very inexpensive. I've tried the tubes in the past and find I can roll them, with filter, faster than fiddling around with the tubes, but that's just me. Also, as a trucker, rolling papers take up much less room in my truck. 
Give Bali Shag Light Halfzware a try. Good smooth taste with no harshness at all.
I travel all over the country and can say that SC has the lowest tobacco prices. If your sister lives there have her buy it for you and ship it to you. Even with shipping it'll save you some money. |

| For the marlboro/basic taste, I use some rowland plat with some good stuff, or just go with some PIIYPASI mixed with largo mellow.Was more of a Camel fan back in the pre-made days ...but for whatever, I have noticed that Twister brand is the most nuetral I ever smoked.For the injector, it is Mascotte hand-held, which is identical to the Twister, Silver Tip Boy, and a few others for around 7$ at Bec's |
