After living here for 20 years I 've come to realize Oregon folks are far from the sharpest knives..well below W.Virgina, Mississippi, or New York urban dwellers.

But this is a new low:

...and one which you can bet the lemmings will line up behind.

There aren't enough drug culture gansters around to occupy the police so just think of it as busy work for them.

I guess smokers in the state will now have to toss their burning butts deep in the underbrush to escape detection. Rolling Eyes

Call me crazy, call me weird, but I like seeing cig butts. Smokers have been banned from so many places one hardly sees them any more. Cig butts are a pleasant reminder they're still around in numbers. And that's what really irks Deb Schallert and the tobacco-phobes that rally her cause.

I have always thought that someone should make a pocket ashtray. I have seen a French one and it was a little round box about 3-4" in diameter with a spring loaded lid and a little cigarette rest. You pulled it out when you wanted a smoke and then snubbed out your cigarette when you were through and put the butt in there and snapped the lid shut. It was metal so it would not catch on fire. I saw this back in the '60's and wished someone had come out with them then, even more now.

If merchants and others won't put up ashtrays in the street, then they will indeed find butts beside the sidewalk and the road. I am so against making people act like animals. Mad

I think if someone wanted to hunt out a place which sold those portable ashtrays and sold them on the website, you might make some nice money.

Well, I tried to post my thoughts at the site, but can't tell if I will be allowed to, so I'll post them here and you'll need to carry the torch.

The tobacco taxes are special taxes. Normally speaking, "special taxes" are levied to pay for the extra costs of a relevant activity, the same as the special tax on gasoline is used to pay for roads.

We need to find out whether the special and extra cigarette taxes were originally supposed to pay for the costs of smoking, as in paying for ashtrays and janitorial clean-up, because if so, then our prohibitive governments are committing graft by refusing to either provide the ashtrays or cut the excise taxes when they do not provide the cleanup services paid for by the tax.

I see that the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is functioning in the Oregon government. Did you vote for them or did you vote for your representative, and as they are about "kids", then why are they screwing with us adult smokers? Looks like an Alliance/Confederacy Clause violation at the State level according to our U.S. Constitution.

I also see that 2 cents of every $1.18 levied on each pack of cigarettes pays for the disabled and they are threatening to increase the disabled tax on cigarettes. Doesn't that program/programs deserve a general fair tax instead of your State government using the disabled as a shield for the anti smoking movement?

I am new here from Colorado. I thought I would comment on this thread because I am originally from Oregon and have been monitoring their situation. Oregon just started a new smoking ban in all restaurant/bars January 1, 2009. My son was in the restaurant business down there and now is out of a job last month. He blames the smoking ban along with the economy.

Colorado's smoking ban is almost 2 years old with many many bars that have went out of business including restaurants actually. Of course, in both states, they want to blame it on the economy which conveniently went bad at the same time.

P.S. Oregon already has a law on the books for throwing cigarette butts on the ground. Yet, Oregon government is very liberal and loves to make more and more new laws that are communistic. This lady legislator is trying for the 3rd time to pass this? Embarassed
