I really like Bali shag tobbacco.
My only issue with it is that it just packs so tight when I roll it that I cant get a good drag.
I have tried several different methods as more tobbacco, less tobbacco, grinding it with a palm grinder, and taking a sewing needle and driving it through the end of the cig.
I still fail at getting puffability.
Does any body have rolling techniques or alternatives for bali shag?
I have a 100 mm thumb rolling machine. |

Go the more commercial route - if you don't like filtered, just cut the filter off after stuffing
There's a variety of tobacco's out there to enjoy, experiment. |

| Shags take some practice to get right, so don't give up just yet. The big secret to stuffing shags and getting a good draw is to fluff the shag up before stuffing it and then letting it dry till it's just a little crisp....throughout. Then stuff but pay attention to make sure you're distributing the tobacco evenly across the paper. It takes more time to roll a shag cigarette but once you're accustomed to it the procedure becomes secondhand. Very few people who master shags don't continue using them, in other words, the extra detail is well worth it. |

Just a note here from a MYO smoker. I have been making my own for 12 years now. Got my first kit like you show above. I was so thrilled cause I knew I was saving money. However, it took me close to 3 months to get to where I could make one pack in an hour. Then my machine broke, ordered another part and never could get it working right, plus everytime I was in a hurry and didn't have any cigs with me I would have to drag that big thing with me and all my stuff, just so I could make cigarettes on the road or at family's house.
So I finally switched to the zig-zag injector. That took some getting used to also, because the big machine you have to let the tobacco dry out a bit, the injector you have to use the tobacco while it is a little damp, anyway after using the injecter for a couple of weeks I could make a pack in 10 minutes and still can. But I do have some tips, to add. Packing. It should be done when you finish making each cigarette or at the end of making the pack. I use a flip-top, hard cigarette case, put as many made cigarettes into it, pack them good, then do the rest of them, this makes them pack fast and you won't lose tobacco out throughout the day. As the tobacco dries in the tube it starts to fall out of the tube and thats why I pack immediately after making them, I also pinch the tip just a bit to keep the tobacco in.
I use regular cut tobacco, I tried several of the shags and just could not get the best cigarette like I wanted. I smoke a brand that is similar to Marlboro, Camels, Benson & Hedges and Pall Mall filters. I use zig-zag tubes and I make around 60 cigarettes a day, I make them for myself and my husband.
In the 12 years I have been making our own, I have had 3 colds, my husband only 2 and even then we are not sure they were not flues. We never have sore throats, little sinus problems and less alergies. All of those things make me wonder what is actually put in the manufactured cigarettes.
Anyway this was just a note about my experiences with making my own. |

I went through three versions of the Supermatic injectors when I started over three years ago.
I bought a Topomatic, which has been going strong for the past two years.
Others have luck with the Supermatic - I never did
I make a carton in roughly an hour or so - watching TV [Depends on what's on ] |

I've been making my own for 2 years now, and have been able to make a carton in 2.5 hours, watching TV, from the start. My roommate, is so slow it makes me nuts. I can make 4 packs in the time it takes her to make one. I told her if it took me that long, I wouldn't bother. |

Yeah I always wonder what crap they are putting in Name Brand cigs.
I want to get one of those machines but I am broke as a joke right now
Iunno though I do have a pretty good job and have been able to afford a huge tattoo, Fish tank and subwoofers all in the same month. So I guess I have to set my priorities strait and get a machine. Oh yeah I almost forgot. I bought some filters a while back I dont remember the name but they were so awful.
A big issue for me is to be able to take really deep drags and these filters were like cardboard. Know of any good filters with good air intake?? |

Bali Shag is some great tobacco. I stuff my own cigarettes w/ Bali Shag using a Top-o-Matic machine and full-flavor king-size tubes. I spread the tobacco out on a tray for about 45 minutes before I start stuffing. The tobacco is too moist to stuff properly straight from the can. Once it has dried a little, though, it works perfectly and is one of my favorite smokes. |

Echoing what others have said, fluff it and dry it to the point of "just barely crispy".
Also, get with the 21st century and stuff it - just cut the filter off. I smoke a number of blends unfiltered including Bali Light (Bali Blue, not so much).
BTW, if you can find it anywhere (it seems to have disappeared from the American market), try some Samson. I've smoked all of the 'zwares, and I think it's the richest and smoothest.
Hopefully, Peter Stokkebye will soon market his blends as "pipe tobacco" - maybe by July. If/when that happens, check out the AmShag.
