On the papers: I have THOUSANDS of rolling papers that I never threw away for the occasion of FSC possibility to sneak into all cigarette paper production.
Rolling machine cigs aren't that difficult and the art of rolling by hand looks to be revived.
The papers I have are 100% Flax - there's got to be an art supply store, etc. that would have that. |

RYOrevolution says a 6 ounce can of tobacco makes about a carton of cigarettes. This equates to a ball park figure of 3 cartons per pound of bagged tobacco.
I found that a can (I believe it's 11 oz) of American Spirit tobacco only makes about 8.5 packs (reg/king size) cigarettes. I only get 2 cartons (or about 24 pack) out of a full lb of tobacco. So I'd love to know how you all get 3 cartons out of lb. The new tax on RYO for me will equal $12/carton...........DOUBLE the carton tax increase of ready mades. Still cheaper for me as the tobacco I buy is $16/lb + $24 new tax so it's only $30 for 2 cartons worth versus the ready mades at $50+/carton. But the whole quadrupeling of tax for RYO tobacco is what is pissing me off even more. |

Yeah, I get @8 packs from a tin of AS [it's 5.29oz -looking at one]
Maybe if you hand roll you could get a carton out of 6oz - but I don't see that with tubes. |

"6 ounce can makes 8 packs, not 10"
I can't refute you on that. I never counted how many packs I get from a 6 ounce tin, I was quoting someone else. So adjust my calculations. We still save and Philip Morris will still be gunning for us.
FSC tubes and papers are definitely on the horizon.
Has anybody here ever used one of those glass marijuana pipes to smoke cigarette tobacco? This is not a flippant question. I think cigarette tobacco, because of the cut and the blend, burns too hot for a wood pipe and the hoarded tubes and papers will run out at some point.
Not that I can't simply switch to pipe tobacco, but for me this whole Tobacco Control issue has become more a defiance against oppression than a love of tobacco. If they say "you can't", by God I WILL! |

A significant shift to RYO would be huge for the Feds but would kill the states. Every smoker who switches from pre-mades to MYO would mean an extra $200.00 - $300.00 per year for the Feds.
If this does happen (and I think there will be a shift in that direction), look out for the states tacking on their own excise taxes on RYO to make up for the revenue loss on pre-mades. Pre-mades are taxed to the hilt already and the states know there is a "tipping point" where tax increases result in reduced revenue. |

Most states tax Other Tobacco Products at a percentage of the "wholesale price". They consider the federal excise tax to be a part of the "wholesale price". Therefore when the "wholesale price" goes up because of the higher included federal excise tax, the state applies its tax percentage against a larger base.
Of course the congressmen knew when they voted for higher federal tobacco excise taxes that they would get more state tobacco taxes from it.
California's OTP tax is "46.76% of the wholesale price". I'm putting "wholesale price" in quotations because when a consumer files a tax return for a mail order purchase, he is required to apply that 46.76% to the purchase price, which is actually the wholesale price plus the retailer's markup.
Lynda: Arizona is a special case. AZ's OTP tax is 22.25 cents per ounce, so the above doesn't apply.
The baby brownshirts at Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids put out a detailed table of state tobacco taxes at www.tobaccofreekids.org/research/factsheets/pdf/0169 |

I've never tried them, but here you go:

Might be a good idea to try one out....

I'm growing my own this year. So I'll only have to pay this extortion for a little bit..........I'm stocking up as much as I can now, which after rent and bills isn't as much as I'd like, but I'll at least have a good 8 months worth of tobacco and tubes before the new tax kicks in.
I've also saved all the papers that came in the tins (have about a year's worth of those) and have also purchased some when ordering my tobacco, along with filters and hand roller. I was preparing for the just in case. Need to really stock up there now too. |
