Mycroft putting all these old ads up reminded me of the fifties, when I was a teenager trying to conserve money. The Lane's Drugstores in toledo carried a ton of weird brands that were a lot cheaper than the 'name' brands-eraly forerunners of the term 'generic', I guess. I smoked some of them from time to time, but most of them were TERRIBLE.

A few were :

WINGS
HOME RUN
FATIMA (he has the ad up now, which triggered the memory jog)

Anybody recall any others from their youth?

Wow, I certainly don't recall any of those brands! Then again, it goes to show I'm still sadly far away from my long-sought goal of finally properly educating myself on older cigarette brands that were discontinued in past decades. Sad

And of course, goes to show how different of an era I grew up in than the 50s(the 80s/90s). Only good thing I can think of about that era was that California(in addition to then very limited numbers of college towns, such as Eugene, OR, Boulder, CO, etc.) was back then about the only place that totally prohibited smoking in all restaurants and bars, and that cigarette advertising wasn't as heavily restricted as it is today. (although then it was prohibited on TV and radio, but not billboard and sport stadium ads)

That is really interesting, not being once asked for an ID when buying cigs when you were under 18! I'm guessing the minimum age to buy cigarettes must have been either set under 18, or there was not a minimum age in effect back then. (though I'll guess the former)
