As Sad and bad as this may sound i dont understand why we smokers are paying to have our rights to smoke taken away, the 2 biggest contributors are the American Lung Association and the American Heart Association, in there self righteous ways beleive by taking our rights away they are doing there jobs, well why does not 1 motivated individual start a website or news service or some giant spam mail program to stop smokers to stop donating to these agencies. (I get on average 50 Spams a day on how to enlarge my penis and breast's and not 1 about not making a donation to these org's.) if we hit them where it hurts, (there Wallets) then maybe we can change there attitudes a bit. Like Let them beleive we want to make our own choices regarding what we want to do with our lives, this is supposed to be the free'est nation on earth, but yet we have more laws than any other country, and laws do not give you right's or freedoms, laws take away your freedom, and by taking away our choices we are not encourageing freedom. they want to take away our right's and freedoms well lets take away there money they so desparatly want and need.

A few years back, there was a movement , which started in a few local areas (toledo was one) with bans being discussed, among businesses in the hospitality industry to stop having fundraisers and stop donating to, the Heart, Lung, and Cancer society. Local bar/restaurant owner Bill DeLaney said it best: "Why should we donate to, or raise money for, organizations whose major issue is the goal of putting us out of business? It doesn't make sense to do that. It's like helping your enemy kill you." I believe in Kentucky somewhere there was another group. I don't know how it turned out, but I know DeLaney to this day refuses to raise one dime for them. The local media here, of course, refused to report on it onther than his initial statement being in the paper ONCE. Not one of the 4 tv stations ever mentioned it.

It's curious that local television did not cover the story.
Was there a lot of t.v. advertising from health care providers on these stations at the time? Maybe HMO sponsorship was interfering with the news?

I agree. We need a list of all the companies that practice employment discrimination, and also the groups that support the anti-smoking movement so we can stop handing money over to them.

The whole key to having political clout is organization. Look at how much political clout senior citizens got after AARP was formed. Of course, it's easier for AARP because a lot of their members are retired, and retired people can devote all their time and energy to organizing and paying attention to news and issues that affect their daily lives.

It might help to set up something like Mturk, where we could break everything down into specific tasks that need to be done in order to get organized. Then individuals could pick out tasks they want to work on. If you're not familiar with Mturk, you can read about it here:

We have a big voting block at 20-25% of the population, but we're not organized like a lot of other minority groups. It looks like people would be mad enough to make that commitment, after this last round of tax increases.
