Hello all;
Haven't posted on here in a while as I've been busy but as you know I'm constantly monitoring the forum (usually for spammers). I've been asked to do an internet radio talk show this month (Bill O'Reilly style of point-counterpoint) in favor of smoking advocacy and against smoking bans. Of course I'll let everyone know when it airs, but right now I'm compiling speaking points. Obviously I'll be going back through the years of good discussions on this site to compile a list of arguments for our case, but if anyone has some good points/facts/etc, please post em here! Thanks!

Hi Bill,
Who's the intended audience?
How does the show skew demographically and regionally? Gist-wise.
[I understand it's internet but who do they think their audience is]

This would be great to put up in a bunch of different sites when done
Make you more famous Very Happy

Hi gilster;
I'm not sure who the intended audience is; it's a mixed, all format internet station: http://www.party934.com/en/
According to their site, "Party 934 is a new type of internet radio station. We are the first truly multigenre station, which means we do not have a set "format." Our "Party Mixologists" have their own shows throughout the day and they get to play whatever type of music or talk about whatever they want."

So I can only assume it's a general audience, and it will probably be available as a podcast download once it's recorded, so open to anyone on the internet. As such, assume the audience will be generally unaware of the plight of smokers (unless they of course smoke).

It will be one hour of me and one anti-smoker going head to head in heated debate and argument. My stance is pro-smoking, anti-smoking ban, their stance is quite the opposite. As such I'm going to need lots of speaking points to fill an hour!!!

Bill.....I assume you will have advance notice of who your adversary will be? That knowledge will probably be a big help in knowing what to expect and prepare for.

Keep us updated.

I have no idea who I will be arguing with, only that my interview will be taped Sept 9 - not sure when it will be aired, but I will keep you updated!
Still looking for more facts and figures ... I have the OSHA tests, but they are kind of old.

C'mon Bill. You've been at this for awhile.

The OSHA stuff is good. Enstrom-Kabat study is a good one to have notes on. Dave Hitt's got a lotta good stuff on his site concerning the fraudulent EPA and WHO studies. FORCES has got tons of stuff.

Don't get too deep into any of the Constitutionality or Propery Rights crap. As long as it is perceived that SHS is harmful, those are losers. Stick with the science. Win the science portion of the debate and those other issues become moot.

There must be some way you can find out who you're up against....isn't there? Sure would be helpful to know. Big difference between arguing with....say.... a Stanton Glantz or some small-town city councilman.

I don't know who I will be up against, but to me that's the moot point. Whomever I'm speaking with they have no argument if I have the facts on my side, and thanks for those tips!

There was ONE property rights issue settled by the US Supreme Court a number of years ago that stated a business did NOT lose its private property status or rights just because it was open to the public. You'd have to find it on the internet, though. I'm going to get hold of Cantiloper.

Cantiloper sent me this missive, Bill:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hiya Dave! Smile Good to see you outta Darkseid uniform! :> Are you in any of the rights yahoo groups? I think I've seen mails from you there but may just be thinking of board postings.

I just tried sending Bill the below through the "Contact Us" form but am getting a simple "Error Your message was not sent" response. Please forward it for me!

========

Hi Bill! Smile

Doc Doom sent up a Spidey Signal and suggested I contact you.

He mentioned the Enstrom/Kabat California study. Excellent study, but if you use it you need to defang the enemy by pointing out yourself that while the first 95% of it was funded by the American Cancer Society, the LAST five percent that allowed E/K to publish the results came from the tobacco industry since ACS didn't want to see the results published.

Here's the link to the study:

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/short/326/7398/1057

What time/station will you be on? If I can pick it up on the puter and I'm awake and here I'll do so.

Only other suggestions I can give you are to have the Stiletto handy (Get it at:

http://encyclopedia.smokersclub.com/257.html

and reread Brains just for general background info/confidence.

Best of luck!! Dunno how much radio you've done but there are two keys:

1) Try to put yourself into the mindset of sitting at a bar arguing the issue with an intelligent friend who disagrees with you in front of a third person. Gesticulate and smile and laugh or get a little loud or be overly polite the same way you might do to win an argument in just that sort of situation. It's just you, the host, and the Anti talking. Other'n watching yer bleepin' language you should ignore the idea that anyone else is listening: you're there to convince the innnocent and ignorant host while arguing with an Anti. (I'm assuming it's a host and twofer situation and that you'll be on the phone...)

2) Don't be nervous: you're going to be FAR better educated in the arguments and on the subject matter than your opponent. All they'll have are soundbites and name calling and you can use both to your advantage with the right answers and the opportunity to point out that you and your site receive no Big Tobacco funding and are in this because you believe in freedom and in standing up to and exposing lies. One key that helped me a lot in terms of nervousness in early debates/interviews was letting myself get angry. You can't let it get out of control cuz it'll turn the audience off real quick, but you SHOULD be angry about what's been done and you can let just enough of that in so that it drives out any nervousness.

Best of luck!

Feel free to write me if there's more I can help with!

Smile
Michael
