Exiling the Happy Meal - Los Angeles Lawmakers Want to Escalate The War on Obesity (And Fast Food)

Exiling the Happy Meal Los Angeles Lawmakers Want to Escalate The War on Obesity (And Fast Food) By SARAH MCBRIDE July 22, 2008

Despite its health-crazy reputation, parts of Los Angeles are plagued by obesity rates that rival any city in America. Now, the city may join a growing roster of local governments aiming to put their residents on diets by cracking down on the fast-food industry.

Jan Perry, a Los Angeles city-council member, is spearheading legislation that would ban new fast-food restaurants like McDonald's and KFC from opening in a 32-square-mile chunk of the city, including her district. The targeted area is already home to some 400 fast-food restaurants, she says, possibly contributing to high obesity rates there -- 30% of adults, compared with about 21% in the rest of the city. Nationally, 25.6% of adults are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While some cities have bans on new fast-food establishments, they typically are for aesthetic reasons or to protect local businesses. Ms. Perry's initiative seems to be a rare instance in which a major city brings health issues into restaurant zoning. The fast-food ban would last a year, although Ms. Perry hopes to make it permanent. On Tuesday, a committee will make a recommendation on the measure before sending it on to the full city council for a vote.

This is really getting crazy...this is also just a bunch of political spin...the government is in bed with the doctors and can't control the high costs of medical care, so now they've decided to tell us what to eat...

They've also come out with Cell phone case brain tumors...well, I dare say you won't find many folks putting those down...

This is just a slow move to cut down on the use of energy, so they don't have to drill or build...

I use to get a kick out of the water shortage rage, they wanted everyone to cut down on water usage then you'd go to city hall and a huge fountain would be running prominently in the square...recall Obama smokes??

I mean we're falling for a whole lot of baloney here...anytime anyone thinks a political entity is telling it straight up is delusional....and the antis talk about tobacco lobbyist, well, what are the antis if not a lobbying group...so it's just one lobby group taking over from another and the rest of us are caught in the middle...

lol...well, maybe McD's will protest by opening up their places to smoking...lol...

I mean, how low can we go here...

And telling folks what they can do in their own homes...good grief...that home owners association afraid of fires...I mean really, like Colo. isn't a fire prone state anyway...the fires in CA are the result of environmentalists that won't let the forrest service clear under brush or do managed fires...See the fires, See the fires burn....

I don't know, is this still America or just a political play ground for Washington D.C....

It's just really getting out of hand...!

This is absolutely absurd! When is the government going to realize that HUMANS DON'T LIVE FOREVER! I know everybody wants to live a long and HAPPY life but the government seems to be forgetting the latter part of that statement. This is just getting completely out of hand.

Why is the government so paranoid about banning every little thing that may or may not be hazardous to one's health. You gotta hand it to the NRA, it's because of them that the government hasn't gotten away with banning guns. We need like a NSRA (National Smoker's Rights Association).

Actually, the government is just trying to convince us that we canNOT be happy unless we do exactly as they say (and there are far too many brain dead idiots out there who actually believe them).

Didn't you get the memo? Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Because they can't or don't want to control the costs of medical care - in L.A., a sanctuary city, they pay for the medical costs of illegal immigrants - I mean whose going to tell a hospital aspirin is only $3.49 a bottle at the drug store which doesn't translate to $50.00/aspirin they charge or the doctor who charges $200.00 for a 5 minute office visit and congress just passed a bill that will give doctors a 10% increase in payments for medicare... See the Doctors...See how they Charge...

L.A. has ads running by Docs and Nurse about how they're going to cut some funding out because the state budget just won't handle it anymore...they've taxed Indian gaming to the max, so they can't make up any more costs for illegal immigrant medical care - but the doctors and nurse don't tell you that - they just say: hey, they're cutting our funding...
