Hello, my name is John Baker and I am heavily involved with Freedom To Choose in our opposition to the UK smoking ban that was brought in on the 1st of July 08. Already I've noticed two friendly names in Gilster and Phil Williams so I know I'll be welcome here. Although the ludicrous smoking ban has only been in for a relatively short time, already the effects are being felt by the hospitality industry, especially our pubs and clubs. I live in the North of England which has been hit particularly hard but still there are no demonstrations in the streets and it seems like the smokers here have accepted their fate. Yet I am still being told that everyone is not happy with the situation? How come? Has the British lost it's love of fair play I ask myself.

Albeit late some brave landlords/ladies and the general public decided 'enough was enough' and held a protest pub crawl in a place called Westgate in Wakefield, Yorkshire. I was fortunate enough to be there and took both videos, you can watch here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zye8vZLNxNw There is another one called More from the Westgate Run. The press were invited but didn't bother to turn up, no surprises there then. Over a week later they decided to get in touch so we got some publicity out of it. Smoking bans are not a local issue but a world wide issue and I can see us all getting together to fight them and big pharma. Indeed it has started now as F2C are co-signatories of the International Coalition Against Prohibition (ICAP).

I look forward to reading more of your fine posts here.

Just curious, but didn't the ban go into affect back in 2007?

Hi John.

Yes JoshNJ, it was 2007, just a typo on Johns part. The ban in England a Wales is over a year old now, while Scotlands is over two. Crying or Very sad

Here in Blackpool a few bars still allow smoking on the quiet.
