Hey guys...great to meet u all.
Been smoking premium pre-rolled for about 10 years, finally getting into the RYO world. Getting sick of being a slave to the masses, and paying 8 bucks a pack....
Brand new to this hobby and like all of you, been buying my cigs online for so long ($30.00) a carton, but I think it's time to move on...go the cheaper route, and start enjoying more sophisticated tobacco.
I purchased the Premier Excel machine, and also purchased Rave Menthol LIght tobacco...w/ Kings regular strength tubes...
I'm wondering, to get the best taste, or closest taste to Marlboro Light Menthol/Newport Light menthol, should I have purchased a light tube, and used the Rave Light menthol? Or does the tube not matter.
For example.
If I use Rave Light menthol tobacco, with a regular king tube - does that transform the cig into a NON light menthol ?
If I use Rave light menthol baccy, with a light king tube, does that give me a closer experience since the baccy is light, and the tube is light?
If I use rave light menthol baccy, with a light menthol tube, will that give me too much menthol?
If I use a rave light (non menthol) but use a menthol tube, will that give me a menthol cig?
There are so many combinations, and I guess the best way to go about it , is to try...but I'm just wondering what I should be using if I like newport light menthol, or marlboro light menthol.
Thanks, and this board looks great, happy to be here |

Hi StunGun,
You really need to experiment for your own tastes. Buy a couple of different cartons of tubes [they are cheap, no big deal] and different tobacco's - mix and match to see what you like.
There's also a lot of information here in this section. Surf around to all the different threads, lots of good ideas and great links.
Welcome to the world of MYO
Oh, and since you are now in the fold, RYO's are Roll Your Own - [ with papers]
MYO's are Make Your Own [with tubes] and there's also SYO - stuff your own [with tubes]
for the purists in grammar out there
Have fun with it
Enjoy real tobacco without the chemicals [took me a week to get used to it]
Reap the savings
Try to buy locally with cash - keep off the information super highway - sooner or later they will be asking for tolls |

There's no difference, I've been on websites where there are 'purists' out there with descriptions and call it SYO instead of MYO.
Kind of like Star Trek fans:
Don't call the die hard Trek fan a Trekie -
We are Trekers |

Got it. I'm a little slow. This is the first time I've heard the term SYO. I immediately checked if StuffYourOwn.com was taken and sure enough, there was a RYO site there. You learn something new everyday.
By the way, I never heard the term Treker either. I just watched the Star Trek movie where Kirk gets killed for the first time a few days ago. I found it on my hard drive. I don't even know when I downloaded it. It had some energy ribbon flying threw space and a really cool weapon that blew up the sun. I can't say this because I don't want the CIA showing up here, but I sure wish I could blast one of those down the mouths of a few bastard politicians I know of. |

Everything you 'sortof' wanted to know about Trekkers vs Trekkies
[side note: on my spell check Trekkers came out OK but the 'Trekkies' has a big red line under it (misspelled) LOL]
I was a purist original series watcher and it took years for me to even watch Enterprise.
Love 'most' of the series now [Deep Space 9 wasn't a favorite] and the movies too. |

As far as creating a cig which is close to Marlboro Light Menthol, I can tell you what worked for a friend of mine, who formerly smoked Marlboro Lights. This blend left him happier than Marlboro Lights did. He prefers People's True Taste Menthol Ultralight stuffed into an El-Ray Menthol Tube.
His problem with Marlboro Light Menthols, was the packs he purchased were often stale, and did not have the menthol blast he preferred. Given the stronger menthol blast of the El-Ray Menthol tubes, stale menthol cigarettes were never an issue for him again. It is my opinion that this guy was more concerned with the menthol blast of the cigarette, as opposed to the nicotine hit. This is why I was surprised he would actually like a menthol ultralight tobacco. As far as the People's True Taste Menthol Ultralight tobacco, the menthol blast is not what I would call strong. When stuffed into the El-Ray tubes, it gave him what he wanted. Since the El-Ray Menthol tubes are not 'light,' I believe the PTT Menthol Ultralight tobacco came across as a light, instead of an ultralight, in that particular tube. (I could be wrong, so the PTT Menthol Light tobacco might work for you as well.)
As far as putting mentholated tobacco into non-mentholated tubes, I see that as a crapshoot at best. That's not to say it wouldn't work. It just means you would end up experimenting with alot more tobaccos and tubes in order to find your particular holy grail. As an example, the Mascotte mentholated tubes, have a very faint menthol taste, in my opinion. So the PTT Menthol Ultralight in that tube would give a considerably milder menthol blast than the El-Ray menthol tube. On the other hand, D & R's Wingate Menthol Light tobacco, has a considerably strong menthol blast, as well as nicotine hit. So it might work well with the Mascotte Menthol tubes. In other words, a tobacco with a milder menthol blast, will need a more heavily mentholated tube, whereas a tobacco with a stronger menthol blast, might work with a more mildly mentholated tube, or perhaps even a non-mentholated tube. |
