It's an issue that's long been smoldering.

But Dallas City Council members now appear inclined to strengthen the city's smoking laws, which today ban lighting up in most public places, but decidedly not bars, taverns, pool halls and tobacco shops.

"I'd like us to move forward," Mayor Tom Leppert told us when asked about expanding the smoking ordinance. "I think there's good support on the council. It's probably the appropriate time we do something."

That would really be a shame if the Dallas City Council does decide to expand their ban into a total ban, since it sounds like all the potential votes may be already there for expanding that city's ban. I worry the same is about to soon happen there, that did when Houston's City Council voted to expanded their ban into bars in late 2006(and was implemented in September 2007).

I'll just say if Dallas is dumb enough to pass an expanded ban, that smokers protest and go to suburban communities that still allow businesses to accommodate smokers, such as Addison.
