Perhaps someone here can help...
I was looking for a place to live in the Los Angeles area and a prospective landlord asked me if I smoked. I replied, "Yes, but only outside, never inside"
She told me that they wanted only non-smokers to live in the apartment complex and that I would not be considered for the apartment.
Of course, in hindsight, I should have simply lied. That's what you get for being honest.
Is this legal? Any recourse that I can take, since this made me rather irate? Of course, I don't want to live in such a fascist complex, but I would like to annoy this lady as much as she annoyed me. |

Landlords can discriminate against smokers and refuse to rent.
You still could file a complaint in saying that you said you don't smoke inside and stated so, but many places are now banning people from smoking outside on patios, etc. and have gone as far as banning smoking on the whole property.
You've just experienced a version of the Jim Crow Laws.
