| Don't have time to track it down right now but I'm about to make someone on another site my bee-itch. Can anyone get me some links to the negative effects the smoking ban has had on the pub business in Ireland? |

" The root of the problem that sees such an extraordinary move by the Irish government lies in the failure of the great experiment which removed personal choice and attempted to turn Irish bars into health clubs, the introduction of the draconian smoking ban. Instead of people flocking to bars as promised, once profitable pubs have closed in the hundreds as people stayed away due to lack of interest in non smoking sterile pubs bereft of customers and atmosphere. Hardest hit have been provincial towns and villages where the pub was the focal point of social gatherings and interaction."

" Donall O'Keeffe, Chief Executive of the Licensed Vintners' Association said :
"Figures from the Dublin trade clearly show that, on average, pub revenues have been hit by between 12% and 15%. ....make no mistake about it, the Smoking Ban is having a serious financial impact".
He went on: "A sustained downturn of 12% to 15% is a serious matter for the majority of Dublin publicans and has clear implications for both jobs and the Exchequer ...the Ban is hurting". "

" Despite a shortage of licensed premises prior to the ban, a booming economy and population explosion, pubs in Dublin are closing at an unprecedented rate as elsewhere in Ireland. Recently it was revealed by a media report that 24 bars in Dublin have closed for good in the past six months."

"2007 will go down as the year off-licences surpassed pubs in the volume of alcohol sold in Ireland. The news gets worse as over 300 mostly rural pubs have closed in the last three years with over 1000 reckoned to have closed in the last three years.
Factors such as the smoking ban, Gardai breath testing and busier lifestyles are some of the causes of the slide"
just a few here for starters...sic 'em torky... |

| Thanks, it's just some idiot who keeps running around in circles and trying to present his opinions as fact. |
