Like all laws, Anti smoking laws seem to be unballanced. either it is there or it is not. Kinda like black and white. What would it take to make all happy? What and where is the border defining smokers and non smokers rights? A non smoker says a person accross the dining room begins to smoke and it affects the entire area. They know it because they can smell it. Why is there no smoking and non smoking bars/restaurants etc?
California allows a bar to be smoking if the bar is owner operated with no employees. I guess smoking/non smoking restaurants won't work hmm? Because the public would enter the smoking restaurant and then sue the restaurant for some health problem blamed on second hand smoke. Making sealed smoking sections in a restaurant would not be economic. It would be too expensive.
I am a non smoker and I very much dilsike the smell and mess that is a result of smoking practices. Getting back to the laws, it seems that its all or nothing. I live in Germany right now and Germany is a smoking,,ahem- was- mecca! Germany today is going through what America went through in the late '80's One difference is there are no Larry Hagman commercials. Remember those? Is anyone here following the events in other nations regarding smoking? Here in Germany there are 16 states. All states are able to make there own laws based on a baseline law similar to America. Bavaria recently enacted a law that is the toughest of all the states here. The Bavarians are nuts over it. Octoberfest?! Here in Germany it is legal to smoke at the age of 16! EVERYWHERE there are cigarette vending machines; on the streets and just about every public place you can imagine (outside) Only last year the government placed restrictions on the machines to help prevent underage people from accessing it.
How is it that smoking has become such a huge debate and seeming problem? Why do so many people smoke? Is it a addiction or just a habit? Is it a privilege, an indulgence that has gotten out of control over the years?
In my oppinion smoking should have been regulated a long time ago. This way it would not be such a shock now.
It is a shame that it has been allowed to get out of control to such a point where lawmakers have to step in and shut smokers out almost completely.
How can the smokers and non smokers be happy? What would it take?
I am very interisted in this VERY big subject. I belive myself to be a very fair and understanding person. I allow views and argument. I am rational and logical. I hope to have feedback and be invited to give feedback to all discussions here. |

A small amount of common sense ----- If the sign says "Smoking Allowed" and smoking bothers you --- Don't go in - dah!

Your response leaves one to assume some future situation. for me I would love to be able to see such a sign at a public entrance as long as I have an equivalent option. For that matter, I think if folkes got their heads together and installed ventilation systems in public gathering places to where, for example at a restaurant, smoke would not drift or gather at all I would not care if smoking was allowed.
I have been to various areas in the world where there were places that had a 'Authorised smoking area' in this example at a bar/grill at an airport where you could sit at the bar, simply walk by etc and not even smell smoke. They must have had some kind of updraft system. It made no noise and no air disturbance. |

Well in MD this was done several years ago. As of 01/01/08 no smoking is allowed inside any buildings. They took the risk to help their business and are now stuck with useless systems, that THEY had to pay for. |

Thats just what I am talking about!! I would most definatlely submit a claim for reimbursment! ,and if that did not swing,I would be suing the state over the cost of installing, maintaining etc of that system!
Everything is such a fight! |

No claim forms, they knew they were taking the risk, but could only allow smoking in certain areas if they installed these systems. Regardless, smoking is banned totally now.....kinda funny huh?  |
