Mr. Williams responded to a post of mine and I thought it best to reply with a new thread.

The advocacy for smoking regulation (A nti S moking) seems to base their strategy on the dangers of FHS/SHS. The smokers rights (S mokers R ights) advocates seem to base their defense on that there is no proven data supporting these claims of danger. This confounds me totally!!!

My question is: Why this war then?
For what real purpose does the AS fight so hard? Why? To what end and for what REAL reason? I mean It is evident that the AS claims their bettering the world by alleviating health problems which snowballs into: health insurance claims, loss work days, early claims on life insurance and so on. If this is the reason for this brutal war and it was proven and accepted that it is a wrong reason, then what would the AS have as a reason to fight on? Afterall, there are major reprocussions to be had!!! the tobacco industry, sales and marketing, transportation, suppliers of packaging materials, machinery for manufacturing, solicitors, advertisers, merchants, design/ RAND personnel I can go on and on! Think of the economic ramifications!! Busineses losing business,,, Whew? That's a high price to pay for mislabelling a cause for health problems.

In our modern times, in this year 2008!, We, the most civilized country in this world,, it is disturbing to think that the USA has made such a seemingly fundamental mistake. (Basing the AS campaign on flase information).

If this is all true, if it is in fact this way, THEN what?!

For anyone who has reviewed ''cause to legislate'' docs, Are there any references to reasons for laws for the purpose of a more comfortable environment to non smokers?, and not only health? I have yet to see this.

It's very simple: Money. These anti-smoking watchdog groups have popped up all over the place (ASHES, TheTruth.com, etc., not to mention all the local groups) due in a large part to money and funds from the tobacco settlements a few years ago. Big tobacco had to pay millions to fund health care (anti-smoking) campaigns as part of the settlement.

So what happened? Everyone started a new non-profit group to benefit and start getting this money. Before 1998, the EPA, OSHA and the WHO had all published studies saying secondhand smoke was not hamrful in any normal environment (see the OSHA study - it said 10 smokers smoking for 5 hours in a 10 foot by 10 foot room STILL did not create significant amounts of dangerous substances in the air).

After 1998 the surgeon general picked and chose a few items from these reports and published a new study, which said secondhand smoke was harmful. This study was later thrown out by the Supreme Court, but the damage had already been done - after 1998 is when all these new groups starting popping up to get their hands on the settlement money.

So now, years later, what have these anti-smoking groups done? Nothing, but further their own cause by creating a furor around smoking bans. And what do they do when they've banned smoking almost everywhere? They need to keep thinking up new reasons to justify their own existence. Smoking banned in bars? OK, let's ban it in parks. Already banned there, OK, let's start a ban in cars. Smoking done? OK, let's start on food and ban trans fats and obese people ...

There is NO reason for these groups to exist and keep imposing their own will on others, except for the fact that they need to in order to continue getting funding. It is a dark and inidious chapter in American history that these groups exist solely to censor and limit our rights as citizens all for a few bucks. But, as with any other conspiracy, all you have to do is follow the money trail to see why it's happening.
