Ok I am on my way! I got my machine, some samples, and some tubes.
Even though I am going through the frustration phase. This is alotta fun!!!!

Even though I decided to try 100's. Which I figured maybe risky being new. I feel I am doing pretty good. Right now i am getting the 1/4 to 1/2 inch at the end but i figure the more I do it the better I will get. I also am a tapper when I am done so thats part of the problem. I have always packed my pre-mades so can't help it.

Any advice on getting closer to the end would be great.

I started with the Premier Quick fill machine thats all it says on the box. But it does both 100's and 84mm.

I tried this stuff called Rave. I actually kinda like it and smells real good in the resealable bag.

Can't make a judgement on the American Spirits just yet the stuff I got I believe is full flavor so its kinda harsh for my likeing. The Rave light in a full flavor tube was pretty good. I smoked one of my basics right after. Holy cow. Its like I noticed the chemical taste instantly.

Well thanks for all the great advice and getting me going on my way. I think I have bypassed alot of mistakes. I woulda went in and bought a 3 pound bag of something. Not like it and gave up!

So thanks again!

Hey Sig,
Well you got a pretty good machine. You could have done much worse than Rave too. Good start. Now just keep stuffing and you ll get progressively better, as far as 1/4 to 1/2 underfill, that should be the other way around ideally. We all tap w/ HH's (most cranks too), you should have about 1/8 to 1/4 inch "carrot top" which you then tap down for a firm stick. Dont worry about it, just use more baccy. Once you start tearing a little tube, you ll know to use just a bit less, and youre there. Like I said, imo thats not bad baccy, but there is WAY better out there too. Glad its working for you, feel free to ask any questions, we all like to help! (we've all been there) Again, it just gets easier!

BTW. The AS (good baccy) is oftentimes dry, which will make it harsh, if it is dry, you ll have to rehydrate it. It will make a world of difference. Its not hard, but there are several ways, all of those references I stated earlier have good info for this. Or do what I do and moisten a paper towel, micro it till it steams, then stick it in overnight (takes a few hours, PT just moist, not wet) mix it a little and youre good! Wink

Ok I got going over on RYO Revolution!

I assumed there was better stuff than the Rave. But for my first buy was happy with it. It gives me something i can goto while I am finding my perfect tobacco. I just thought I was gonna be trying tobacco after tobacco to find something desecent.

But heres a list of what I got so people know the things I am trying.

American Spirit - Perique blend is all it says its a black pouch!
Rave - Light
Zig-Zag - Light and full
Bali shag - Blue pouch

Then I have zig-zag tubes - 1 box light 100's - 1 box full 100's

That tobacco is very strong, I've smoked it and boy what a head rush, can go for hours without a cig after that.
I believe they tout it as a ceremonial blend.

The dark and light blue AS are their regular leaf, you can also buy the 'orange' or 'red' pouches- Organic (that will be very dry)

Tubes will make or break your taste-strength, IMHO.

I started with ZigZag but soon went to Premier Lights
[both of these have heavy perforations at the filter and your fingers will stain- Zen tubes are great [bought some on line] trying to get a local source now to buy in cash.

On tapping, I'm lousy at it, so I grab 10 or so sticks and tap all together - getting a better and firmer tap.

On the papers you get with the tobacco, I save mine and make my friends who smoke 'other' plants very happy, they no longer have the stigma of buying papers for their entertainment.

Wll Sig, you certainly got an assortment! The Bali you got is an awesome baccy, the AS is a high quality one too. The Bali (a PS blend, WTG!) is pretty strong, but also very smooth! Its one of the better fire cured (Halfzwares) available. Youd be hard pressed to find a premade like this one. Remember, the AS can be quite strong and supposedly contains a lot of nicotine, but, again, make sure its moist and springy, it ll help smooth it out (another good choice, albeit expensive). Of course everyones taste is different, to me the Zig Zag is OK in small doses, but too many leaves a bad taste in my mouth, ymmv. The Rave is a very popular choice, never had it myself, but hear its good, especially considering the cost (from what I hear, it doesnt leave a bad taste in your mouth, like many low priced baccys do).
Well, again enjoy! Razz

Well today I tapped a couple times then threw them in an old basic box. Once I got 18 made, thats all I could get in there without forcing anything, I packed them like a normal pack. So we will see tomorrow how that turned out. That was my first pack I made before I was kinda just doing them as I needed.

I didn't relize there was a tamping tool LOL. That made things easier now I am getting less tubes coming off half-way. Oh do I hate when that happens.

How long can tobacco last? I had a coupon on that Bali Shag said exp. june 2007. Tasted find actually had a salty taste which was interesting LOL.

The idea with Rave was I wanted to have at least a good quantity of one tobacco since I bought so many samples. I bought the 6oz. bag. Nothing major but more than the sample bags. But the packaging is nice and the smell when you open it is real good! After I make it when you smell the cigarette it has that good smell to it. Well thats my review on that I'm still new. But since I smoke Basics I found the Full Flavor tube with Rave Light to be an ok substitute for now. Obviously not an exact replica but the Basic is filled with chemicals and such so who cares. Very Happy

Well yeah Sig, no wonder you were underfilling! Lol, you do need the tamper! I think thats one the best HH's personally and you can make perfect sticks w/it w/a little practice.

Syo sticks are a little fatter so 18 sounds about right.

Tobacco gets better w/age as long as it doesnt dry out and turn to shake. PS tabacs dont dry unless the cans opened, so just take out what youre gonna stuff and reseal, matter of fact PS is oftentimes too moist to stuff right out of the can and needs a couple minutes to dry a bit before stuffing. But not much longer or it ll turn to shake. Salty huh? Never heard it put like that, but as halfzwares are so flavorful theres a lot going on in it. Well sounds like youre doing pretty well! Smile

The following is what I have found when making king size cigs:

7 oz=carton
14 oz=2 cartons
16 oz=2 cartons + 3.5 packs

Expect less than the above when making 100s.

This is definitely the way to go, particularly when you first get into ryo/myo/syo. Pick one tobacco to keep on hand in quantity for your daily smokes, then order smaller samples of other tobaccos. This way insures you don't get stuck with a pound of tobacco that you don't like. (I personally refuse to buy pounds of tobacco I haven't tasted.) In the course of trying your samples, don't be surprised if you eventually find something you like better than Rave, or whatever your daily smoke happens to be at the time.

The way it happened for me was, I eventually forgot about attempting to duplicate a premade. Since so many tobaccos taste FAR better than premades, even the major brands, I ended up following my own specific taste preferences, rather than attempting to duplicate a premade. Now, I am so spoiled taste-wise, I couldn't go back to premades even if I wanted to or if they gave premades away for free. I smoke in a totally different world now in doing syo rather than buying premades.

I think he was asking about it going bad as opposed to how many cigarettes can be mode.

I started rolling when money was tight. College student with a part time job and a family to support.

Finished school and got a good paying job after a year of rolling TOPS and ZigZag. It tried my former brand of premade cigarettes and couldn't stand the taste anymore. That was 10 years ago, and I'm still rolling.

I was a carton a week with premades. Now a 7oz can will last me 3wk+. I love the control over the amount of tobacco in a cigarette. Even more the fact that it goes out if i set it down and get distracted instead of burning up(that alone probably would save me 3 pks a week)

I gave up on TOPS and ZigZag though. Stokers #2 i really like but stared having trouble getting it. Currently smoking "People's True Taste" from Somerset, KY. It's just as good, and $16/lb here.
