After reading some stuff about smoking in CA, I am compelled to give my input as well. I have lived here in CA for many years and although it is true that smoking indoors is now banned, I have yet to know anyone who has been cited or arrested for smoking in their car or outside in public. There are signs posted at most city, county and state buildings that say No smoking within 20 feet of the door, or something like that. The Indian Casino's however do have both smoking and non smoking sections.
California has become pretty much a police state, but not quite as extreme as some might think.
Oh yeah, there is no smoking allowed in county jails but you can still smoke in state prison. |

| The government can't tell the Native Americans what to do. The tobacco store where I work is Native American owned. It is in Palm Springs and on reservation land. It is the only tobacco shop in Palm Springs where smoking is not only allowed but is encouraged. Non-Smokers come in to buy cigarettes for there partners and complain about the smoke. One came in a few days ago and started screaming at me, saying, "I hope you die of lung cancer". We had to chase him out into the parking lot to get him out of the store. If such people hate tobacco, shouldn't they stay out of stores that sell it. I agree, California is slowly slipping into being a police state. The scarey thing is that the people not only let it, many of them like it. It is people like the idiot in our shop, that get laws passed. I heard that Malibu Beach won't let people smoke on it any more. Also, public parks and in your car if underaged people are in them. Soon you won't be able to smoke outside or in your own homes. When is it going to stop? |

| Unfortunately this will probably not stop in CA, but you don't have to follow those rules. It's like a seat belt or cell phone law. Just don't worry about it. Smoke on the beach, and if you get caught, buys your butt. No big deal. You just have to follow your indoor smoking ban, becasue it's easier to catch you then. Don't follow the car or sidewalk smoking ban, because you can always get rid of your butt, and the authority wouldn't be able to prove you were smoking. Don't be caught up in the misconception that you must follow all laws. |

| I don't really worry about smoking inside. I spend almost all of my time on an Indian reservation, so I hardly ever notice the smoking ban. I can smoke in doors and nobody can say anything. Even the police smoke inside when they visit the shop. What bothers me is the hostility these laws have created. If I drove a motorcycle without a helmet, nobody would stop me and say, "I hope you get in an accident and bash your brains out". But with cigarettes, it is different. People think they are better than us because they don't smoke. Sure we can break the laws and get away with it (sometimes). But that will only make the bastards more self-righteous than thay already are. And breaking the laws, won't stop the laws from existing at all. |
