Do any of you use secondary filters while smoking? If so, which ones?
I tried Denicotea and was not impressed. Denicotea uses silica gel crystals as a filter. After 3 smokes, the cartridge smells very nasty and leaves a funky taste on the first puff. It doesn't seem to filter that well. The interesting thing about the Denicotea cartridges is the red top on the cartridge pops off quite easily. I imagine it would be possible to purchase silica gel crystals (not the ones that change color) in bulk and refill these cartridges yourself. You can also remove the surrounding paper from a filter plug, roll it between your fingers to compress it, then pop that in the Denicotea filter cartridge after removing the crystals. This makes for an exceedingly light smoke since the filter plug must be compressed in order to slip into the cartridge.
The disposable Aquafilters are a bit better. One Aquafilter is claimed to last for an entire pack of smokes. After the 10th cig, it leaves a funky taste on the first puff.
The Targard mini disposable cigarette filters and the TarBar disposable filters are my favorites. Both are claimed to last for 5-7 cigarettes and once used, should be thrown away. I have found, however, that you can pop these filters apart, soak them in alcohol, then reuse them. They certainly clean up the smoke a helluvalot better than an unmodified Denicotea filter or Aquafilters.
These Targard and TarBar mini disposable filters allow you to determine which tobaccos are higher in tar content. With some tobaccos, these filters must be cleaned after 3-4 cigarettes, which denotes a higher tar content. I use them to create the perfect ultralight, which for me is, Rave ultralight in a Zig-Zag light tube smoked through either a Targard or TarBar mini disposable filter. At the end of the day, I don't even feel as if I have smoked at all.
I haven't tried the Friend Holder filters. I am particularly interested in the Air Blend version, which allows you to adjust how much air (if any) can be mixed with your smoke on the inhale. I don't know if the Friend Holder cartridges could be cleaned or not.
Do you use secondary filters for smoking? If so, which do you prefer and why? |

Some of the cig holder do have filters in them. Most of the Friend Holders has a tar trap, as well as a secondary filter, while the Denicotea holders use silica gel in cartridges to filter, and the David Ross holders look as if they use a mini tar trap, much like the Nic-Out or TarGard mini filters. If you visit The Lady Smokes you can see some of these cig holders, as well as pictures of the filters.
Some other cig holders are only tar traps, like the TarGard and Friend Holder permanent models. The TarGard Permanent Cigarette Filter System, which is only a tar trap, was made famous by Hunter S. Thompson.
From what I understand, the first cig holders which were really long, were used before cigs had filters, in order to keep tobacco out of one's mouth, as well as to cool the smoke. |

Ok, in the course of creating the perfect syo ultralight, I have finally found my favorite secondary filter. It's the Friend Holder Air Blend. This filter uses the Friend Holder cartridges, which have two filters in the cartridge - a tar trap and a second polymer filter.
Additionally, the Air Blend has a dial which allows you to set how much air is injected into the smoke on the inhale. Since I stuff ultralight tobaccos into vented light tubes (both Zig Zag and Gambler light tubes have perforated filters which inject air on the inhale), leaving the Friend Holder Air Blend set to allow maximum air intake, allows for the lightest possible smoke, since both the tubes and the filter vent the maximal amount of air into the smoke on the inhale.
For little more than $21 per month, I can have 5 packs of the disposable filter cartridges delivered to my door. My cigs are now lighter than the Nat Sherman Naturals ultralights. Now, I really want to get my hands on some nasty, trashy tobacco, like Gambler ultralight, in order to see exactly how much of the nasty taste these filters can remove.
However, the Friend Holder Air Blend filters aren't foot longs like FDR used. The Air Blend is less than 2.5 inches long, whereas the Denicotea is 3.25 inches long. |

Unless you are on oddball like me who prefers the lightest possible cigarette. Given that I have smoked ultralight for the last 24 of the last 27 years and given that NO company presently offers an ultralight tube in the market, what is my other option? |

I'm with darkangel_riq on this one.
Can you even taste the tobacco that way?
Sort of like making a gallon of iced tea with a single tea bag (the ones meant for a single cup).
Or a 10 cup pot of coffee using a tablespoon of coffee.
I'll continue to roll my own thank you. I like the taste of my tobacco, and won't smoke anything I don't like (like Bugler, nasty stuff). |

Just curious STdog, whats so "nasty" about Bugler? Or is there just something about it that you cant put your finger on? Its not a recon ridden garbacco like a lot of em. And of course its your option not to smoke anything you dont like for CS, just like its Alist's to smoke ultralights. |
