Hello, I'm new to this blog today; I just joined The Smoking Lobby. Anyhow, all looks great and informative. I'm a college student in Washington state. I need to write a pro-con debate and I chose the topic of "smoking during pregnancy". i can find alot of info for the negative side but none at all for the pro side. i sure would appreciate some help. Thank you!

My Grandmother smoked when she carried her 2 children. My Mom smoked with all 3 of us. I smoked through 2 pregnancies. Our family has no history of SIDS, asthma, allergies, etc. My Mom is 82 years old and still smokes, non-filters. My babies weighed 6 lb. 6 oz., and 7 lb. 3 oz. Those are pretty good birth weights considering that I only weighed 100 lbs. when I got pregnant, and the fact that both my husband and I were thin, and have small bone structures. My husband's mother smoked thru all 3 of her pregnancies, with no SIDS, asthma, allergies, etc. All of the aforementioned had normal pregnancies, deliveries, and VERY normal babies; and all led perfectly normal, healthy lives.

Needless to say, I feel that if someone wants to smoke while pregnant, that it will in no way affect their babies.

By the way, when I was pregnant, most of my friends were also pregnant; and most of my friends smoked. I know none of them had any problems.

Like Lynda says, if smoking during pregnancy is so dangerous, how did all of us baby boomers survive to this day? Question

The list of maladies supposedly caused by smoking is endless and growing.

These studies are all epidemiological in nature and are NOT....I repeat, NOT "science" by any stretch. They are funded and performed by extremely biased, agenda-driven groups and individuals who stand to profit if, and only if, the results are favorable to the agenda. These studies are manipulated, massaged and then gift-wrapped for the media. Ya got yer lies, yer damned lies and if all that fails ya break out the statistics....and the antis use 'em all.

Smoking while pregnant is without a doubt perfectly safe. Not a single one of their studies even comes close to showing any causal effect of anything whatsoever. That includes baby AND mom.

I also am a "baby boomer". I am 60 years old, I have two children, one is 39 and one is 37. One smokes and one doesn't. They are both very bright and very healthy. They both were healthy at birth and never required any medical intervention. I started smoking before my first pregnancy and never quit. I had to quit drinking beer during my pregnancies because it gave me major indigestion, but I sure as heck could drink wine. So I did.

I'm also healthy. Do not have lung or heart problems. When (and if) I have health issues, I suspect they will be age-related...I expect to live to be 100.

Anti-smokers need to get over this crap. Cool

gardengirl...

My darling baby, who is now a healthy, productive, educated, talented young lady was two weeks overdue and so large that a C-section was required...and yes, I smoked throughout...
I have 2 friends that suffered miscarriages and secondary infertility...both are non smokers...
one friend that had 2 of her babies so premature that they spent the first months of their lives in the NICU...a non smoker also...
One thing that absolutely made me ill during pregnancy was chicken...forget it's consumption...the smell made my head spin...just driving by a KFC or walking near the poultry aisle at the market would make me want to vomit...
SO...Did I demand legislation to ban chicken? Did I insist my friends and family clear their refrigerators when I visited? Did I make my home a nugget-free zone? No...with common sense I made attempts to stay away from that which was unpleasant to my senses and when it was unavoidable...I smiled politely and had a smoke...

I only wish that the same 'second-hand _____(whatever, insert one's annoyance here)' arguments that antis successfully used to get smoking banned in essentially all businesses, could finally be used back AGAINST antis, to get their favorite habits banned too!

And hey, it's only fair we return the favor of bans and banning against the majority, if the anti-smoking lobby(which is only supported by nothing more than a MINORITY of the non-smoking population, anyway) insists on using falsified, nanny-state junk science against us smokers!

It's already STARTED-or haven't you read the thread about being fat or drinking alcohol causing cancer quicker than smoking?
