EDGEWOOD -- Secondhand smoke is making air pollution levels inside
Kenton County restaurants and bars about six times higher than the
federal government says is safe, an air quality study released today
shows.
The study from Northern Kentucky Action was released today at St.
Elizabeth's Medical Center as Covington officials get ready to vote on a
new ordinance that would ban tobacco from city-owned buildings.
Northern Kentucky Action is a coalition of businesses and agencies that
advocate for smoke-free air. Members include the Northern Kentucky
Health Department, American Lung Association, American Heart
Association, American Cancer Society, St. Elizabeth Medical Center and
several local businesses.
The study found that, on average, pollution particles small enough to be
inhaled directly into lung tissue measured 199 micrograms per cubic
meter in 28 Kenton County bars and restaurants.
Federal air quality standards for outdoor air set a maximum exposure
limit of 35 micrograms of pollutants, said Heather Robertson, manager of
the Clean Indoor Air Partnership and the Kentucky Center for smoke-Free
Policy at the University of Kentucky.
Robertson said 14 communities throughout Kentucky have adopted
smoke-free ordinances; Northern Kentucky is the only metropolitan area
in the state that doesn't have such legislation in place, she said.
"It's a public health issue," she said, adding secondhand
smoke affects the health of workers in restaurants, bars and taverns.
Covington's city commission will give the first reading of a new
ordinance that would ban smoking inside city-owned buildings Tuesday
night, said City Commissioner Jerry Stricker.
The current ordinance sets aside one indoor area in each building for
smokers, but new state legislation allows cities to adopt laws forcing
smokers to go outdoors, he said. Stricker expects the ordinance to pass.
Ohio voters adopted a statewide ban on smoking in bars, restaurants and
other public places last year.
No one's calling for such a measure in Kentucky yet, but Stricker
said he'd like to see such legislation in Northern Kentucky, at
least.
Consumers who don't smoke don't like smoky environments in
Northern Kentucky restaurants and bars, and it's costing the area
business, he said.
"My guess is they're going to Cincinnati, `cause they hate
the smoke. I know we're losing business because of it," he said.
There's been some discussion in Campbell County of a smoke-free
ordinance, but Stricker said the three largest counties – Boone,
Campbell and Kenton – would have to enact bans simultaneously in
order for the restrictions to be effective. |

Thank you, Lynda F, for seperating those links. I KNEW all along that this silly attempt to ban smoking in government buildings in Covington, KY, is in essence, their first 'firing shot', before they do their major attack(aka the desire of antis to ban smoking in all the 3 Northern KY counties). |
