Well, Michigan just raised the tax on cigarettes here...we're now second only to New Jersey.

I swear this is a form of discrimination. Why don't they tax overweight people? Put a tax on all the unhealthy junk food out there. Tax alcohol a bit more...drunk drivers. Why not tax abortions? Grrr...I am so frustrated right now!

It is truely sad to hear that in a State I once lived in.

Why not get back at them? Make your own smokes? They still collect a bit of tax, but overall, you save $$$ and don't send nearly as much to the state Very Happy

I make my own and I figure I pay about $1.70 a pack TOTAL. An initial investment of a $50 - $70 little machine, an a bit of practice is all it takes.

Best part is, every time I take a puff, it's $$$ not going to the State!

Best to you

I have friends in MI and they drive to KY a couple of times a year and stock up and keep the cartons in their deep freeze. The state tax is still 3 cents a pack and the Democrats so far have resisted the Rep plan to jack it up to 24 cents. On-Line buying is a good option also, Indian Reservation or KY sites generally are the most reliable. Best of luck.

Just like I told you (Deb) on the smokingpermitted.com forum, I'd look into buying cartons online if I was you. Besides KY, I also hear MI smokers also drive to Indiana in order to get their cigarettes. Outside of buying cartons online, I buy my smokes in Indiana too. A lot of Chicago smokers are going to Indiana to get their cigarettes now thanks to our own tax hike, but I've actually been going there to support my pleasurable habit ever since I started smoking.

I see that MI raised their tax to $2.00. Now our tax just went up to $2.40 per pack. This is a positive sign, because then MI may become so dependent on cig tax revenue that they won't even think about smoking bans. That's what happened in NJ and it's great. Now it seems like we'll never have a smoking ban. People in my closest city, Paterson, NJ don't seem to respect a fast food joint that says no smoking. They are just so happy to bum a cig that they won't let go till it's finished. I noticed more people smoking in stores, and restaurants. Some places it's allowed, some places it's not, but the idea is that fewer people are throwing a half smoked cig in the ashtray before entering a NJ inner city store. People just won't let that cig go. Before, a homeless person, or someone working for minium wage (5.15/hr) wouldn't risk a small fine for a 10 cent cigarette, but for a 35 cent cigarette, people start taking that risk more often. I'm just trying to look at the positive in this. There's no positive for us in a smoking ban, but in excise taxes, we are winning.
