This guy contacted me for an interview this morning (1 hour before going to press with the story!!) but infortunately I missed his deadline, here's what he said:

Quote:
We are working on a story about Providence Medical Center in Everett's campus wide ban against smoking. The latest news is that starting today patients who insist on smoking will be discharged from the hospital. We will be talking with hospital officials about why they thought this was an important step. We are looking for balance. We are trying to speak with a smoking rights advocate.

If you are one or can point me toward one will you please call my cell phone. This is a story for today (Monday, June 18th) . My deadline is 11:30am. Thank you.

Lowell Deo
KCPQ Reporter

My response:

Mr. Deo;
Sorry I missed your deadline, I would have loved to dicuss this with you! For future reference my name is Bill Williams, I am the President and Founder of Smokinglobby.com, a Forum advocacy group for Smoker's Rights. And also for the record, I think that this hospital administration shoud be taken out and shot one by one for discriminating against smokers like this. Smoking is a legal and enjoyable hobby, and a right, and I think it is absolutely insane and ludicrous that they would treat a large population minority like this (Smokers make up about 30% of the population). If they threw blacks or jews out of their hospital I bet noone would stand for it - why are we the only minority treated like this?!?

Thank you,
Bill Williams

This is really pissing me off - smokers are lower than leper-status...

Their press release:
http://www.providence.org/everett/news/goingtobaccofree.htm?PreviewState=1

~snip~
Quote:
Important Information for Patients Regarding this New Policy

Providence Everett’s former tobacco use policy allowed patients to go outside to smoke if they received written orders from their physician. This will no longer be allowed. No physician will write orders to allow patients to leave the building to use tobacco products during their hospital stay. If a patient experiences discomfort due to nicotine cravings, the hospital staff will work with the patient to relieve the discomfort by prescribing or making smoking cessation products available.

As of June 18, 2007, any patient who chooses to leave the building to use tobacco products will be discharged from the hospital. This has potential impact on a patient’s insurance coverage for the visit and also means that the patient must be readmitted before medical treatment can be resumed.

Please help Providence Everett provide a healing environment for patients, guests, medical staff, and employees by following this new policy.

Wonder if a 'non-smoker' patient can ask to go out for some fresh air?

I am sooooooo glad I don't live in that State. There must be something in the air or water there that the whole state appears to be populated by brainless wimps.

I'm glad I don't live in that state eitha, I'd ratha get service in a hospital with sensible folks. If a hospital threaten to discharge me if I insisted on smoking, I might talk to the person who's responsible for hiring those arsehole workers.

I actually like that idea. Lighting up in the hospital room is my way of saying "F-U! If I'm gonna pay for treatment AND to pay to stay in this room, I'm gonna get my darn money's worth by smoking!"

If hospitals denied ALL smokers as patients, they would lose money in a heartbeat. They being the mothas running the hospitals.

I like the idea of smokers lighting up in as many buildings as possible. Ala a smoke-IN.
