It has been proven that the fumes and smoke off of burning toast have shown to cause severe reactions in some people, and even 20 seconds of exposure can lead to severe health hazards.
The proponents of the toast ban claim that it is best for public safety if we just ban toast in all establishments, rather than worry about whether individual business can establish policies to protect the customers. They show numerous studies where average businesses in the past have failed to protect customers and employees from this scourge on public health.
Restaurant owners against the ban have adamantly opposed this over-reaching legislation, and claim that the science is not legitimate. They claim that THE POISON IS IN THE DOSE, and this legislation is just hysteria gone rampant.
The Association for Restaurants in concert with local politicians has proposed a compromise. The new regulation called Toaster Safety & Toaster Certification "TSTC", will protect patrons and employees alike.
As long as every business complies with this law, it will level the playing field and also ensure public health.
TSTC will allow businesses to serve toast providing they use equipment that has been certified by OSHA and the EPA. New standards will be implemented that ensure that toast is only "lightly toasted", and ventillation equipment must be installed directly above the equipment.
To safeguard employees and reduce accidental exposure, every employee engaged in toasting must be certified as a licensed Toaster, and pass a 3 day course in toaster safety.
Any restaurant that exposes patrons to burned toast can be fined $2000 per incident.
Prueo Reich, of the associations for restaurants said; "This law will not prevent patrons from suing the restaurant for accidental toast burning, but if the toaster was trained and certified, the lawsuit would be much harder to pursue."
Greg Free of Southlake stood up at the conference and said; "I like burned toast, and I like eating it in restaurants, I actually order it that way."
Free went on to say, "If this thing passes, I want to start up a restaurant that only serves burned toast, and will challenge the constitutionality of these laws ." He proclaimed; "If I post it on the door, anyone with a problem with that can go elsewhere."
Free was only one of a very few at the conference that felt that way.
Carrie Dount, said; " It doesnt matter to me either way, I am only here because I want to make sure this ordinance does not affect toasting in my home. If they come into our homes, whats next? Burned marshmallows?
The American Society for Pure Air says that the TSTC legislation is far from being the answer for this serious health issue. A complete ban will eventually be imposed, even if we have to come back at this again next year....and the year after that. |
