If you are buying cheap or discounted cigarettes you might want to know what is in them. Even some premium commercial brands are using over 50% reconstituted tobacco in their blends. "Recon" is scrap tobacco that is treated with bleach and ammonia to make tobacco paper and then sprayed with flavorings. Recon allows tobacco companies to use cheap foriegn tobacco and recycle tobacco waste. The cheaper your cigarette, the more reconstituted tobacco you smoke.
Many foriegn countries do not regulate the kinds of pesticides that may be used on tobacco. Even US grown tobacco may have chemical residues from aldicarb and maliec hyradrazide to name just two. The only way to know what is going into your tobacco is to buy certified organic tobacco. A search on the terms "organic tobacco company" will take you to a group of organic tobacco growers who direct market their whole leaf organic tobacco with a kit to make your own RYO/MYO tobacco. |

If the premium brands have up to 50% reconstituted tobacco, then why not buy the discount brand with the same? I'm not really following you here.
I say, if you're brave enough to pay $3 a carton for some overseas brand, you should assume you're going to have some camel droppings and whatnot inside. I think as Tom put it, "the cheapest is not always the best". |

...Because the other 50% of discount tobacco is expanded stem and low quality foriegn tobacco. At least premium brands have some real tobacco in them. Nevertheless, the point is that all commercial tobacco except certified organic has pesticide/herbicide residues and chemical additives that are a lot more hazardous than camel dung(actually a good organic fertilizer).
Raising taxes on tobacco causes very few smokers to quit. It has however created quite a market for discount tobacco. This has put pressure on tobacco growers to cut corners and use more chemicals to produce higher yields. The real-world result of higher tobacco taxes and the Master Settlement has been to flood the market with low quality chemical-laden tobacco that is potentially more hazardous than tobacco that is grown without chemicals. Tobacco companies rely on more chemical additives and flavorings to mask the flavor of lower quality tobacco. Instead of encouraging smokers to quit, government regulation and taxes have created a more hazardous product.
Buying discount tobacco or cigarettes is bad for you and bad for the environment. Smoking any product that contains reconstituted tobacco is bad for you. Organic tobacco may or may not be as bad for you as premium tobacco but it is arguably less risky than smoking discount products for the reasons I site above. Organic tobacco is certainly responsible for certifying over 1,500 acres of tobacco farmland organic and pesticide free and is keeping a small group of family farms sustainable. If even a few percent of current smokers were to switch to organic smokes it would increase organic tobacco acreage by 100x and keep many family farms from being sold to developers.
If you care about tobacco quality, then you know that the quality of the smoking experience is far more important than quantity. A really good smoke leaves you feeling satisfied. A bad smoke is just that and leaves you feeling unsatisfied. I don't think that they can tax camel droppings, but they can tax horse, cow and goat droppings, especially during election years. |

My search turned up nil... maybe I'm using the wrong search engine. Care to post your favorites? Much appreciated. |
