(Sorry, I mistakenly posted this to the smokers' rights forum.)
I'm a long-time Salem Lights smoker & very unhappy about whatever RJ Reynolds is doing with this brand (ie., developing about 50 new versions of Salem Lights, and eliminating the regular old one). I now smoke Salem Lights "Green Label." The company insists it's the same "formula" as regular Salem Lights, but I can't help noticing otherwise. I'll probably quit before I switch brands. This sounds silly in light of the potential harmful effects of smoking in general, but I swear the new brand is making me sick. I've definitely cut down as a result.
Are there any other Salem Light smokers out there who are upset about what's going on w/this brand?

I've smoked the Salem FF 100's in the old days (but after RJR changed the pack look). Those Salems made me wanna quit, but I didn't. I wish I grew up in the Classic Salem days, when Salems tasted a lot like how Benson & Hedges Menthols taste like now to ex-Salem smokers. I never smoked the Salem lights, and I never will. I tried the Salem Green Labels once (I got free packs in the mail once). That Salem Green Label tasted better than the other "new Salems" I smoked, but not that much better.
Salem would make a good brand for quitting, because I wouldn't spend lots of money on cheap menthols. In case you didn't notice, I smoke B&H menthols and VS menthol 120's. I like Marlboro Light 100's for regulars, and I prefer all-white cigs personally. |

Camel Lights all the way.
Of all brands, I have heard that the menthols are very damaging because they contain fiberglass - is that true? |

It's true menthols are more addictive (because they're easier to inhale and "absorb" easier in the lungs), and it's true menthols open up your breathing passages and they soothe sore throats. I never got confirmation on menthols having fiberglass though after being on the net for 5 years.
Even if menthols do have fiberglass, why should I be concerned about that? There's no such thing as a safe cig. LOL Menthols make a good cig for regular smokers with the flu. At least that's what some non-menthol smokers told me. |

I haven't smoked any of the US made Salems. I have however ordered some from yesmoke. I think they suck!!!! If I am smoking menthol, I prefer Marlboro menthol OR Newport.
One day (awhile ago, when it was still feasible for someone on a student's income to buy a pack at the gas station) I overheard a guy asking the cashier if they still sold Newports. The cashier responded with "I don't see why we wouldn't be..." and the guy said "Oh, I heard they were going to stop making them because they have fiberglass in them".
I have to agree that smoking menthols when you are sick does make you feel better (usually).... I couldn't smoke at all when I got bronchitis last fall (well, actually I did, but by the time I finished coughing the [freakin'] cig. was halfway gone...... took another drag and then gone)........ had to go back to dipping for a week until it cleared up......... tried to quit, but after about 6 hours, the brain farts got to me and I needed my nicotine (and I don't care what any "expert" says.... those nicotine replacement gums, patches, etc. DO NOT HELP AT ALL!!!!!!!!!). I still dip occasionally, but not that often (have to be in the mood for it). |

The new mini menthols marlboro's shelling out are hardcore, but they're bringing in a whole new generation of smokers... it's kinda scary.
and yes, fiberglass; that's why when people smoke newports constantly they cough up blood (if they smoke any significant amount)
but who wants to talk about smoking? don't you all have anything more interesting going on?

In case you didn't notice, this forum is on a site related with smokers' rights. Any discussion that has nothing to do with smoking would be considered off-topic for this site.

| Salem Green Label does kind of suck, the Black Label is much better. If you like menthol, Camel Turkish Jades are great, that's my brand of choice. |
