Hello there. My family and I started rolling our own a month ago. At the time, we bought a Premier Excel, but it died on us last night (wouldn't fill the ends near the filter and the rest were hard as rocks, with little tobacco). So today we went and invested in the Supermatic, or as I believe it's fondly known as, Big Blue. Now I have a couple of questions...
1. It seems to be filling all king sized tubes as they were hundreds. It's leaving 1/8" - 1/4" of tobacco out of the end of the tube. And it seems to be shooting the tube off before the lever is released. We have it set for king size tubes, and also tried the regular setting. Any ideas what may be causing this and how to fix it?
2. And possibly even more important, since after rolling a mere pack I have little feeling remaining in my left arm... What exactly is the best way to hold the machine?
Thank you! |

I started my MYO adventure the same as you - bought the plastic machine -Jammed alot until it jammed for the last time.
Then bought the 'Big Blue' - also had the tobacco sticking out of the tubes way too much. Believe it or not, set the machine to 100's - it solved that problem for me and got the tobacco closer to the filter. I always clip the ends with scissors - back into the pile.
You can get a workout for your arm- make sure you put it on a slip-free surface so it doesn't move. When you get to the fine particles of tobacco - it'll make it more difficult to turn and jam - don't try to use every little piece. The long threads are the best and the machine is a snap to use.
Also, the moisture of the tobacco is important - too moist or dry - you'll get into jams. Check out ryomagazine.com for info and videos that will help.
Good luck and happy tubing... |

NNM,
First let me say welcome aboard.
"What exactly is the best way to hold the machine? "
What I've done is to mount mine to an old piece of counter top. I cut a hole (the size of the machine) in a 1/2" piece of plywood and nailed it to the counter top. On the bottom of the counter top I glued pieces of old innertube to keep it from sliding when placed on my work table.
Now the left hand just does the paperwork
The zippster had pictures of mounting his to a work bench but I couldn't find the thread.
You might want to check this thread out to make the machine run smoother.

Keep us posted on how it's working for you.

Try this and see if it makes things run smoother for you: No tools or mods necessary!
Set the machine so that the nozzle is pointing towards you. Yeah, the label on top of the machine is sideways now, but ignore it.... work with me here....
Takes a second to get used to, but you'll quickly notice this is a lot more efficient (easier and speedier), the thing won't slide all over the place, and it allows you to simply pull the crank back towards you instead of using that quirky circular motion. A LOT easier on the arm.
Load tobacco with left hand
Place tube on nozzle with right hand
With your left hand, make an "L" with your thumb and index finger and hold the machine steady at its lower left corner (around the ridge where the "blue" meets the "grey").
Pull the crank back towards you. Notice how your crank hand and your support hand work together to keep everything balanced and straight.
Rinse and repeat.
(I believe this method will also lessen or eliminate the dreaded "downward pressure" on the crank which can cause its failure) |

My first RYO machine was the blue Supermatic. I had a lot of problems with it jamming and just not working correctly (maybe I got a lemon?).
I bought the TOP-O-MATIC and it is superior in my opinion. Never had a jam. It's not as "finicky" as the Supermatic. Never have to clean it either. If I remember correctly, it may have been even less expensive than the Supermatic too! |

credit must be given.... I saw this simple brainstorm on the SYO list just before getting my machine, and not only does it work so well and proper, I don't belive I've ever used it "label-side" up!!??
and Major H, the "the Ramback ordeal" wasn't supposed to be inconflict, etc.

| Hello again everyone. Thank you all so much for your advice. However, I didn’t get much of a chance to use it. Big Blue and I had finally come to an understanding, and I was getting to where it wouldn’t take me an hour to roll a pack and it didn’t hurt so bad that I was vowing to quit smoking (by holding it exactly as MajorHavoc described). And then Thanksgiving Eve, just under one month of ownership, the SOB broke. One of the little nubs fell off the cam. I was obviously upset, because I had to buy another machine until I could get him fixed. (And yet, it is still saving me a ton of money.) So back to the Excel it is. Thankfully. Honestly, I’m not so upset. I like that machine so much more. Anyhow, just wanted to update. Thank you again. |

| I guess you didn't see my reply above. The supermatic (IMO) is a POS. Try the Top-o-matic. Peace. |

Durty Nelly, I like your view of Supermatics as 'finicky'. I have come to that conclusion too.
I'll keep an eye out for a TOP-O-Matic. I am on my third version of Supermatic after the small blue one jammed completely, large blue metal one locked up and now I am on the gold Supermatic - which so far seems like the best in their line. |
