Interesting stuff Carol Ann, IR2084 and Eric...in Minnesota it's the Democrats that are pushing the anti-smoking issue.
I think if a corrupt politician's going to make money off it...they'll do it.
and Eric, I still can't finish that "Huckabee Finn" article...I got disgusted halfway through reading it and stopped.
If any of you knows where to look to find proof of a monetary link between an anti-smoking group and a corrupt politician, I'm all ears...or in the internets' case, "eyes". |

The anti-smokers control BOTH SIDES. That's why there's no opposition to them. Mary Lasker was one of the biggest contributors to the Democratic Party since the 1950s; she had massive ties to LBJ, during whose administration the Lasker Lobby entrenched their anti-smoking operatives in HEW (now the DHHS). And, you will miss a lot if you limit your attention to only anti-smoking groups and ignore wealthy indiividual anti-smokers (such as Lawrence A. Tisch, former CEO of Loews Corp. which owned Lorillard Tobacco, who was a big donor to liberal Democrats such as Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, and John Kerry; and his relatives, who gave money to Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Joe Biden and Tom Harkin.

In Minnesota politics, Mary Lasker's friend Frances Humphrey Howard was important. Howard was the "younger sister and confidante of Democratic leader Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr., who was Vice President of the US under LBJ. She came to Washington DC in the 1930s to live with her uncle, who worked in the Department of Agriculture, and graduated from George Washington University in 1937. In 1941, she became First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's assistant for employee activities in the National Civil Defense Office. In the 1950s, Eleanor Roosevelt chose her to become director of the United Nations Association. After leaving the UNA in 1959 to work on her brother's presidential campaign, she became "a State Department liaison officer to 60 voluntary organizations that offered community development programs in other countries." (Frances H. Howard, 88, Dies; Socialite and Policy Advocate. By Louie Estrada. The Washington Post 2002 Sep. 24, p. B07.) Mary Lasker was a also a friend of Eleanor Roosevelt and an activist in the UNA; her chosen heir to run the Mary Woodard Lasker Trust and the Lasker Foundation, Neen Hunt, is a former chief operating officer of the UNA-USA. Howard worked for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (now HHS) during the Nixon administration. In 1970, she joined the National Library of Medicine as Special Assistant to the Associate Director for Extramural Programs. "In that capacity, she has helped draw attention to medical libraries, and served as a liaison between NLM and other federal agencies, the biomedical community, private nonprofit organizations, and universities." (Frances Humphrey Howard Retires from NLM. NLM Newsline 1999 October-December;54(4).) "Though never a residential New Yorker, Frances adored the Big Apple, home to her beloved United Nations and her beloved Eleanor [Roosevelt]. She would never miss a Democratic Party convention held here. Margaret Mead sought out her anthropological knowledge of political behavior the night of Jimmy Carter's nomination at Madison Square Garden. They watched the rituals from a balcony with Frances serving as Margaret's native guide. Frances loved coming to Manhattan also at springtime to admire the Park Avenue tulips donated by her friend, Mary Lasker." ("The Musicality of Frances Humphrey Howard (1914-2002). Remembrance by Wilton S. Dillon, Senior Scholar Emeritus, Smithsonian Institution, Dec. 9, 2002.) "It was said of Frances Howard that if she didn't know who you were in Washington, you probably weren't worth knowing.... She was a fixture at Democratic events and was a participant in every Democratic National Convention from the one in Philadelphia in 1948 that propelled her brother to the national stage with his successful landmark civil rights fight to the convention that nominated Al Gore 54 years later." (Bits & Pieces. Politics in Minnesota 2002 Oct. 11;21(6).) Philip Morris donated $10,000 to the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs; Congress donated $5 million, and Japan $1 million. (HHH Institute Receives $10,000. The Tobacco Observer, 1978 Aug;3(4):8.) Remember the infamous Friendship Heights Village ban on smoking in parks and on public sidewalks? "The main village park, rebuilt in 1970, was formally dedicated as 'Hubert Humphrey Friendship Park' in 1978. Hubert Humphrey's sister, Frances Humphrey Howard, often visited the Village; Senator Humphrey's grandson lived in the Willoughby while a student at American University" (Friendship Heights Village web page). And, the photo of its anti-smoker mayor in People magazine resulted in his arrest for fondling a 14-year old boy in National Cathedral. (Friendship Heights mayor accused of fondling boy. By Myra Mensh Patner. The Gazette, Feb. 2, 2001.) Both HHH's son, Hubert "Skip" H. Humphrey III, the former Minnesota Attorney General who filed the state lawsuit against the tobacco industry; and his grandson, Hubert "Buck" H. Humphrey IV, graduated from American University.

Kind of a shame that the extreme liberal left is the same, exact, repressive thing as the extreme religious right.
They have different methods but the agenda is the same and we're running out of options that aren't one extreme or the other.
NIME, don't know about Colorado, but the newspaper here which supports a ban hasn't been any help at all in informing people when city council meetings are going on until well after the fact.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, most people do not even realize this type of shit is happening until it's already happened. That's partly why you only get a 20% voter turnout, and I honestly don't know if 100% turning out would have changed anything but it'd sure be nice if the majority who knew about it weren't all organized.
Shame they won't just let the people actually effected by the ban vote on it, 'cause I really don't think the majority care.
Sadly the landscape has changed drastically in Colorado, It is no longer the place it was 30 years ago, building of yuppie McMansions and Townhouses is rampant and most of the influx is from California,
Denver even bans fires in your fireplace due to the air pollution there, gee do you think all them cowboys smoking around campfires are the cause?
There is so much shit coming down from all levels of government these days it is difficult to be aware before its a done deal and even if we were aware I don't think we could stop them, sometimes I have the feeling it is a waste of my time and energy to even bother to vote, most folks I know are so frustrated with the system don't bother.
The party picks the candidates, there is very seldom any choice in the primaries, Republicans and Democrats are pretty much out of the same stinking barrel- It is just like Russia used to be, the party selects the candidates and you either vote or you don't.
The groups sponsoring these Orwellian laws are well funded and persistant.
For example in NJ attempts to pass a ban have failed repeatedly in the past due to resistance from the legislators representing the casino areas.
To compromise with allowing smoking only in casinos for the sole purpose of getting their bill through, how low is that and how stupid are these legislators to fall for this ploy?

Exhibit F: JRS666 is a liberal Democrat.
Enough said.
In response to his national health care socialist rant, that he's copied and pasted for the 24th time, I will provide links to 500 pages that explain why waiting 3 years for an operation like they do in Canada is not such a swell idea. |

Erica:
I have no particular party affiliation. They're all whores.
Further, I wasn't talking about Canada. Do some research on European countries.
By the way, since you have such a sexual attraction to Canada, the case of the broken ankles followed by an ER visit and hospital stay would, actually, result in a bill.
--$16 for a pair of crutches (That's $16 Canadian.)
The #1 reason why Americans declare bankruptcy is for medical bills, NOT for credit card debt. That's sick.
Is a fur coat a luxury? You bet. Is a month's doses of Advair Diskus at a cost of $132 a luxury. No. |

Don't assume or extrapolate.
Clinton lied under oath (a punishable offense for the rest of us little people) and Bush Jr just lied.
Now, Erica, do you think I'm assuming or extrapolating that you're a child molester because your avatar on this site is a child's toy? Do you want to attract children?
Understand now? |

JRS mistakenly thought:Quote: your avatar on this site is a child's toy?
Actually, that is Officer Barbrady from South Park. I can't blame you for not knowing that since you don't watch it. A left wing liberal would enjoy watching South Park about as much as I would enjoy watching a Michael Moore exercise video.
In the meantime, judging by the number of responses we have gotten to our argument about national health care (one), I don't think this is the proper forum for the discussion.
Let's take a poll. Are you interest in discussing health care reform?
A. Yes, a good health care reform debate is better than sex.
B. No, I would rather be sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and be forced to listen to Streisand records on a continuous loop.
C. Maybe, but I have to wash my cat first and then watch a Discovery Channel special on the African dung beetle.
D. Take this debate to the forum on USCommunistParty.org where it belongs.
I still want to have this debate. Let's just take it somewhere else. Give me a link to whatever Socialist, left wing website you go to discuss this and I'll meet you there.

Golly gee JRS, are you upset with me? Does this have anything to do with me calling you the Antichrist?
Look, if it's that important to you, fine, we'll debate national health care here. I never said I didn't want to have the debate, I just would hate to see all the new people I've met on the site flee elsewhere out of sheer boredom. |
