I received a couple of tax bills from my state (NJ) for past purchases that I made online for cigs (reporting company is no longer in business). My question(s) is (are). Do I have to pay these? Since the company is no longer in business didn't they violate privacy issues? Do I have any rights here, or should I just pay these bills and hope for the best that no other purchases are reported back? I checked with the company I now use and they do not report back. Thanks.

I'm from Jersey too. I would pay those tax bills. In the future, I'd be more careful who I was buying from though. Make sure the business is really overseas or on American Indian land before ordering. This way they don't follow US laws.

If you made more than a couple of purchases from "the company" you can be assured you will be receiving more tax bills. The state of New Jersey sends a individual tax bill for each purchase-- sometimes more than a year after the purchase.

Personally, I think you should, and hope you will, sue the Division of Taxation in Tax Court. The filing fee is about $35, which you should be willing to pay to defend the Constitution. At minimum you will force the state to spend a lot more than that to STEEL [Start Taxing Everyone Else's Liberty] your money. Stay mad! and fight back. I've learned a lot from my lawsuit, and am willing to help you with the composition of the legal documents.

I almost wish I'd been taxed, I would have sued their ass off. That is total bullshit.

I agree that's a cheap way to send a message that we will fight back in the courts if we have to.
