LLS761,
The last sentence in the letter that I received says:
If you have any questions regarding this matter, you may contact Assett Forfeiture and Seized Property Branch at (202) 927-0100 before 3/28/2005. Have you called that number yet to ask questions as to what to do. I haven't because I'm afraid to. I got hardly any sleep last night because I was having nightmares all night long. |

| I was wondering the same thing about any taxes that we get billed for being tax deductible. I would imagine if you paid $1,000 or more in taxes all at one time that they would be deductible. We purchased a tractor with significant sales tax & it was deductible! So why wouldn't any other significant sales tax imposed on as at one time be deductible. Makes sense to me. But I'll deal with that if the time comes. |

| My letters are from the IL Dept. of Revenue, so I don't have that phone number listed. I haven't called any of the numbers on my letter because I don't think it would be a good idea to draw attention to myself. I was extremely upset when I first received the letters too. Its not so much the taxes (although I think a "use" tax is ridiculous), its the fact that they imposed fines without first informing me I owed the money and giving me a chance to pay. Unfortunately anti-smoking campaigns and discrimination against smokers are popular causes right now and I don't think anyone is going to step forward to help us. |

The states are mostly subpoenaing the records from the internet companies.
"The aggressive enforcement comes as more state legislatures are pushing even higher cigarette taxes to plug budget holes and pay for state programs such as public education and Medicaid."
